In the next few days, we'll be rolling out a new preference to give users more control over who can give them gift works. This change is an important step in our ongoing work to give users more options to control their experience on the Archive and limit unwanted interactions.

The preference will be called "Allow others to give me gift works outside gift exchanges and prompt memes."

When this preference is enabled, any AO3 user will be able to give you a work. That's the current behavior on the Archive, and it will be the default behavior for all existing users.

When the preference is disabled, the only users who will be able to give you works are users who have either been assigned to create a fanwork for you in a gift exchange or claimed one of your non-anonymous prompts in a prompt meme. In other words, if you absolutely do not want to receive gifts from anyone, you can disable this preference and avoid signing up for challenges.

The preference will be disabled by default for accounts created after the roll out. (We'd usually disable any new preferences by default, but allowing gifts is necessary to avoid interfering with ongoing challenges.)

If a user has the preference disabled and you attempt to give them an unrequested gift, you will receive an error message telling you the user does not allow gifts.

The preference only applies to new gifts, so you will still be able to edit any existing gifts without removing the recipient.

Your Gifts page will remain accessible regardless of whether you've enabled or disabled the preference. You will still be able to refuse existing or new gifts.

Wait, what?

If you're an existing AO3 user, nothing will change unless you update your preferences.
If you never want to receive gift works, you can uncheck "Allow others to give me gift works outside gift exchanges and prompt memes" on your preferences page and avoid signing up for any challenges.

We'll update this post to let you know when the changes have been deployed.

this is exciting!! im still crossing my fingers for a block feature (especially considering a current situation with a set of minors that keep interacting with my nsfw fics @_@) but im glad to see you can opt out of gifts!

As a compromise between the opt in and opt out for new users, could this setting be prominently flagged during account creation so that new users see the option without digging into settings?

  I agree with this. Many people, myself included, often don't look at default settings unless they're flagged. What about a flag with an explanation, like "You MUST check "enable gifts" to receive gifts! If you don't check "enable gifts," you cannot get treats in a gift exchange!"
  Without a flag, I foresee a large number of people never noticing that gifts are disabled. This will not only mean they'll miss out on something they might enjoy, but since no one else can see if gifts are enabled or not, it will cause problems for participants and mods of gift exchanges.

Hi! Thanks for having an option and I can see it'll help those who've experienced abuse. My question is maybe a little technical — can users adjust their settings to receive a gift and then later on, change it so they don't receive gifts outside of exchanges, etc? I'm asking this bec some fandom exchanges only use AO3 as a collection, but don't use the signup / matching function within it. Or perhaps a bypass feature that if a user is a member of a collection, they can receive a gift from anyone that's a member of that collection as well? Thank you!

  Thank you for your questions. It will be possible to turn the preference on and off as many times as you wish, even if you've already received gifts. However, it will not be possible for collection members to bypass the setting. We did consider that possibility, but we decided to err on the side of being more restrictive because anyone can join or submit a work to a collection.

Oh good, this is a step in the right direction. Thanks for your hard work, y'all.
Couple questions for the staff:
-When the blocking feature eventually rolls out, will blocking someone remove any gifts you've refused from your Refused Gifts list, so you don't have to see them in the list? [I'm not asking if this will delete the works, I know that isn't possible, I'm just talking about not wanting to see it in the list. For example, a person might have refused a gift from someone that they don't otherwise want to block - like a NSFW gift - but they might also have refused a gift from someone they're blocking once blocking becomes available.]
-Will it also remove Related Works that link on the blockee's end? [Again, I don't mean deleting the work, just removing the link between works.] I'm saying this because it isn't just Gifts that gets used for targeted harassment but Related Works - you can refuse a gift at present but even if you don't link to a related work on your end, the other person can still link to it and this... can cause issues, as well as be triggering to see in one's list of Related Works. I'd really like a feature to be able to disconnect this or have it part of blocking. [And just reporting the unwanted linked work doesn't necessarily work, as there are things that might be triggering/harassing to the one linked to that the Abuse team doesn't define as harassment.] Actually, I can see "inspired by" works being used as a way to circumvent gifts-turned-off, which will create more new problems for the Abuse team to handle, so y'all might want to look into how the system currently handles Related Works. IMO a work should not be able to link to yours at all without consent, it's not enough that "you don't have to link to it from your end".

  This goes against the basic principle of the internet. Anyone can link to anything. Even if AO3 rolls out features that will remove the archive-specific "related works" function for blocked users, a fic can just copy and paste the link to a different work manually. This cannot be blocked because it's not how the internet works.

I appreciate AO3's ongoing exploration of ways to protect users from harassment. I can see some ways to work around hassles others have already brought up with regard to treating in exchanges. It'll be an interesting challenge!
Are ADT also looking at the possibility for moderators to create new assignments after the main assignment generation stage of an exchange? That would help a lot with the difficulty of adapting this change to current exchange treating culture. It's also a feature that has other uses. I can imagine it's not completely abuse-proof, but the need for someone to be signed up to an exchange first, + the likelihood that several more humans would be involved at once rather than one person with a grudge attacking another, would make abuse significantly less likely.

  I'd like to +1 all of this.
  As an exchange mod I am admittedly assignments Georg since both of my exchanges require complicated spreadsheets just to keep track of assignments. My main exchange has 1 to 10 assignments per participant (everyone gets 10k total, the creators can split that up in a variety of ways), which are often filled by separate people working on gifts of separate fandoms/mediums/pairings that cannot be combined into a single work. Anyone signing up to my exchanges will be well aware of how many gifts they may have coming since it's in the premise.
  I'm not really sure of how to handle getting everyone's owed gifts to them with the new gift system unless I was able to generate extra assignments. I definitely think it's good for people to be able to opt out of getting gifts in the wild if they're experiencing harassment, so the obvious answer of just making it against the rules of my exchanges to sign up while opting out of extra gifts seems like the wrong move, but I'm not sure how else it could work as is.

Another question: in future, will it be possible to whitelist users, so that A has "no gifts outside exchanges" turned on, unless the gift is from B, in which case it's fine?

For exchanges: I think it would be helpful if exchange moderators can see whether users signed up to their challenge have gifts enabled. That could come in handy for situations such as emergency pinch hits.

I hope in the future when you refuse a gift it just disappears instead of going under the Refused Gifts tab. I rejected it for a reason. I'm never gonna want to go back and accept it.

  It's unfortunately possible to misclick and refuse a gift that way, especially on mobile. A two-step "refuse gift; go to refused gifts page and purge refused gift from page" process could work, though.

      I agree with this too! The current system isn't the worst, I can see how improving it isn't a priority - but once I've refused a gift, the creator can't take my name off it and I can't take it off my refused gifts page. Being able to remove it from the refused gifts page as well would be preferable.

I think this is a really useful feature and a reasonable step to combat harassment.
However, I really hope you'll consider making it visible to logged-in AO3 users whether someone opts into gifts or not. Writing someone a treat in an exchange or a gift fic for a prompt they left, only to have AO3 tell you upon trying to upload the gift (when you've already wasted all the time creating it) that they don't accept gifts would suck.
Just to be clear: I'm 100% supporting people opting out of gifts, but I think not showing this information to logged-in users is unnecessarily damaging to treating culture without any good reason. Having it be visible on a user's profile that they don't accept gifts wouldn't at all be counterproductive to warding off harassers and it would be incredibly helpful to people trying to give good faith gifts and treats.

  I agree. I don't see how "this account does not accept gifts/this account accepts gifts" can harm the person with the account.
  Not having it visible is annoying for anyone who would like to give a person a gift but can't tell whether or not they'd like to receive one. If someone has gifts off because they don't want to be harassed or bothered, then commenting to ask them if they would like a gift may come across as harassing or bothering. It also makes exchanges much more difficult for mods to run if they can't tell if a participant is open to treats or not.

  Someone suggested that the requests of people who have opted out of receiving gifts be hidden once the exchange assignments have been sent out.
  This sounds like a way to fix this problem - as only the requests of those who could receive gifts would be visible in the full Requests Summary.
  If that's not doable, perhaps at least a class name could be added to the requests of those who are opted in and a different class to the requests of those who are opted out, so that a custom style sheet could be created that filtered out (or rendered in pale grey etc) the requests of participants who can't be given treats.

  I don't participate in exchanges but this would be useful to have outside of that too, like let's say Person A wanted to write a gift fic for Person B because Person B leaves lovely comments on their fic and Person B is one of the only other people in the fandom who ships $RAREPAIR - it would be useful to know Person B doesn't accept gifts before Person A goes to the time and trouble to write them a little gifty thing.
  I 100% support people opting out of gifts, but yes, I think this info should be available on the profile. It definitely would not be counterproductive to warding off harassers.

I applaud this change overall, but as an exchange mod I'm going to have to throw in my two cents.
- Please make this option clear to new users when they sign up, as it would be very easy to never realize that gifts are even a thing.
- Please allow exchange mods, at least, to see whether somebody has gifts turned off.
- I would personally prefer a secondary tier that allows gifts inside a collection I've signed up for while disallowing others. Some people will never want extra gifts; some might be willing to risk it for treats.
- Barring that, I agree with Morbane on the ability to generate new assignments would be crucial as an exchange mod in light of this change.

I'm sad to hear people were misusing this wonderful feature, to the point where it needs to be turned off by default. I had never heard of this type of harassment and this makes me suspect is more common than one would think initially. Like, not people being targeted on a personal level but, more as if it's getting weaponized on shipwars or against people that write about certain tropes. Thank you for all the effort you put into improving the archive!

This is awesome. I deleted an old account because I had a semi-popular fic but kept getting gift works from someone who, sorry, was awful. The drawings didn't reflect the story at all and it seemed like my fic was just a dumping ground for barely related artwork that would detract from the fic.
I know that as authors, we're supposed to be flattered when we're gifted with something, but that's not always the case. I thanked the artist for the contribution but told them I wouldn't be posting it through my fic.
They got angry. Like, SUPER angry. They were not mature enough to not take it personally and considering I'm not married to kudos and comments, I pulled the fic and went to another side account.
This option of opting out of gifts is awesome, on every level, as I'm sure I'm not the only author out there that has had more negative than positive experiences with gift works. Thanks for this!

As somebody who received a harassing "gift" fic in the past, I'm glad this change is being implemented. But as somebody who also participates in exchanges and enjoys receiving treats besides my assigned gifts, I'm wondering if it's possible to tweak the setting so that people can opt in to any gifts sent to them via exchanges, regardless of whether they're from their assigned creator or someone else. Since exchanges are already something of a closed loop, it's pretty rare for that sort of harassment to take place through those venues (especially since the exchange moderator(s) are able to see who the offending gifter is). If that's possible, it could help resolve some of the concerns I've seen about trying to treat someone who has opted out of non-exchange gifts.

Hello! As a mod of an exchange, I do support measures to reduce harassment! However I do have some concerns as related to exchanges and some general concerns.
1. Mods will need some additional tools to generate assignments. There are just currently too many ways to be stuck unable to generate an assignment for someone who needs one, because people are humans and mistakes happen. There are also exchanges that don't generate assignments in the traditional ways.
2. There needs to be some way that mods at the very least, and preferably all users can see in someone's Request if gifts are enabled or not. Many exchanges have a rule that you can give someone a gift based on their Request that follows exchange rules, and having is a secret if you can treat someone or not will only lead to hurt feelings and confusion. This wouldn't have the same vulnerability as someone being able to go to your userpage and see right away if you have gifts on or not, but would prevent a great deal of problems for exchanges and prompts.
3. Please make the actual toggle very obvious and intuitive. I have been using ao3 for a very long time, and it's still a good day when I can submit a fic correctly the first time without missing a tickbox or selection window. There was a significant problem with ao3 users missing the Language selection. If it's just on the Gifts page itself, I would guess most users will never click.
3.5. If you could make it so the exchange or prompt signup has a big "Your gift preferences are currently ON/OFF, would you like to change them to ON/OFF ( ) or keep them the same ( )?" that has to be clicked to sign up for an exchange, or something similar, it would help a lot with making sure exchange participants understand this is a feature now.

  One cannot see what exchanges an AO3 user is signed up for just from their profile page, so having the "Treats on Y/N?" visible on the exchange requests would make it clear for anyone looking to treat whether or not the participant accepts treats while not showing that information to random passersby stalking the profile.

Thank you for your work in improving Ao3. I appreciate your work, but I have a small concern about treats in exchanges. Many people give treats (gifts made for users they are not assigned to) in fanfiction exchanges. Under this rule, it is entirely possible for users to create treats, attempt to upload them, and then find out that the person doesn't have the ability to accept turned on. This will lead to emails to the collection administrators who are ultimately powerless as to that person's settings and have literally no way to know what a user's settings are, and an ultimately frustrating experience for users.
In order to prevent this, I am wondering:
1. Could we please get a warning for users signing up for an exchange when the preference is disabled ("no gifts")? If I am reading correctly, all new accounts will default to the preference being disabled (no gifts)? Many new users will not think to go through their settings tbh and may want treats, but not know of the option.
2. Could there be a middle ground preference that would allow people to consent to receiving treats in exchanges that they have signed up for? So a "treat" compatible option where you can consent to gifts in an exchange would be appreciated. (Especially as mods already have an ability to moderate content, which means fewer harassments gifts will be given -- and if they are given, will be caught prior to "reveals"). If this is not possible, could we please get some sort of indication on sign-ups which users have the ability to gift turned on, so we would know who is open to treats and who is not, either for users to see or at least for mods to see?
Thank you for your work once again, but I can see this causing a lot of headache for exchange moderators and wanted to offer a couple suggestions to help smooth the transition, if possible to implement.

I think having this disabled by default is going to cause many people to not realize they are rejecting gifts they would want to have. I think people should opt-out of receiving gifts (or opt-in to a reject-gifts feature) similar to how you could set your work to be available to registered users only, but not have that on by default. Many users of AO3 won't know this is even a thing.

So from what I understand that the biggest concern users have will be the new user being defaulted to not being able to receive gifts. Which the question going forward is how will Ao3 inform new users of gifting being a thing? Much of Ao3 is hands off, but I do think mentioning the idea behind gifting would be good with new users will also mentioning it being defaulted to being opt out. It just seems many people are afraid of gifting becoming an obsolute thing if new users have no idea of it being a thing. Along with the lack of distinction for certain features such as collections/challanges. I didnt even know gifting was already turned on as a default.
