Chapter Text
It was early in the morning as Maria Hil slept with her head comfortably resting in her arms as they were supported in the big desk in front of her.
It wasn't new for the brunette to fall asleep when she stayed up all night in the office getting all the paperwork done. Sure, the blue-eyed woman would definitely regret it later when her neck started to hurt like all the past times she had done it before.
She wasn't as young as she used to be…
Or that was until she was awoken by her phone ringing loudly all over the office. Maria let out a groan as she lifted her head up and narrowed her eyes at the sudden brightness coming from the screen.
Unknown number
The woman frowned as she tried to wipe the sleep out of her eyes as she accepted the call. She didn't speak, in the other sideof the line the only thing heard was someone's heavy breathing. Some seconds later the unknown person spoke…
“Maria?” The woman felt her heart stop beating when she heard that voice. Natasha. No, it was impossible. The redhead was gone, there was no way this was her deceased friend. Maria's hands started to shake, the blue-eyed woman let out a shattered breath.
“Natasha?” She said quietly “Nat? Is that you?” her voice was filled with emotion, no one was aware of how much she had missed the redhead.
“Yeah… it's me” the widow responded “Hi” Neither of them knew what to say. “What? No it's impossible you were dea-“ Maria was so confused, anything of this made sense.
“Dead? Yeah I know. I promise I'll explain everything later, we need your help. Something happened, we need to be quick” Was this a dream? It was actually Natasha…her best friend. Did Clint know she's alive? The officer had so many questions.
“Look… I need you to track down our location. Someone kidnapped us, we just escaped but I don't know were we are. Can you pick us up?” As the redhead talked, Maria was trying to proccess all the new information. Wait a minute, did she say we? Who was we?
“I- sure, yeah… give me a minute” Maria stuttered. It wasn't a difficult task, it didn't take her long to find Natasha's location. For some reason she was in the outsides of List, a small town in Germany. “Care to explain what are you doing in Germany?” The blue-eyed woman asked as she started to get ready to take a flight to Germany, she would borrow one on of SHIELD's many airplanes.
“It's a long story… Madame B kidnapped us” Natasha started to explain and Maria's eyes went wide open at the mention of the name. Before she could ask if she was okay, Natasha started to talk again “Maria… It was… it was about Natalie” The last part barley came as a whisper, that was a name that hadn't been said outloud in the past fifiteen years.
The agents breath hitched at the mention of her goddaughter's name. What did her little dinosour have to do with all this? “Look… I can't explain it over the phone and I'm about to run out of battery. I have to go” Natasha said in a rush and Maria nodded.
“Alright, I'll be there in some hours. Just don't move, I'll see you later. Bye” With that Maria hung up.
The officer didn't tell anyone where she was going, not even Fury. Maybe she should have to, if this was about Natalie he should probably know. The eye patch man was practically the kid's grandfather but it was too late now. She would call him later and explain everything.
After two long hours Maria had finally arrived to the middle of nowhere. She was tired and hungry but if she got to see Natasha again it would be worth it. The blue-eyed woman walked for a while until she was able to spot a redhead next to a slightly shorter blonde girl.
“Nat…” she gasped as the widow turned around “Maria” the redhead whispered as she walked towards the brunette. The officer didn't waste a minute and ran to go and engulf the redhead in a hug.
“Tasha” Maria whispered in Natasha's ear “Masha” the younger woman whispered back. “I missed you… what's going on? How are you even alive?” Maria asked as she pulled away from the widow.
“Well… Yelena, she found a way to bring me back. She returned the soul stone in exchange for my soul” Natasha quickly explained.
“Yelena as your sister… Yelena?” Maria wanted a confirmation, if she was a lesbian she would definitely kiss Natasha's sister on the lips for bringing the redhead back.
The widow grinned and nodded as she motioned to the blonde woman to come. When Yelena was next to her, she put her arms around the girl's shoulders. “Lena… this is Maria. Maria this is my baby sister, Yelena” The brunette offered the blonde a gentle smile.
“I've heard a lot about you, Yelena. It's nice to finally meet you” She said as she shook the girls hand. Yelena nodded but didn't say anything.
After all the presentations and greetings the three women made their way back to the aircraft. As they headed back Maria and Natasha caught up with everything they had missed in the last few years.
“So… care to explain what the hell happened?” Maria asked once they were on the vehicle. “It was one of red room's old trainers, Madame B” the redhead explained and the other woman nodded.
“And how does this involves…. Natalie?” Maria questioned cautiously knowing how the topic could affect her friend, she heard Natasha sighting and fidgeting in her seat.
“Madame B wanted to know where was she” The widow said with a shaky voice and the blue-eyed woman frowned. “She said Yelena knew where she is” Natasha kept explaining her voice came barley as a whisper. Her eyes never left the road.
“What do you mean? Natasha that's impossible… Natty is gone” Maria said with her voice filled with uncertainty but saw Natasha shaking her head. She was aware this was a subject Natasha wouldn't joke about.
“Maria…” the redhead whispered “She's alive, it was HYDRA. They made us think she was dead and took her to the red room” Natasha let some tears fall from her eyes “Maria, she was there the whole time… Natalie escaped when she was 11 years old. They lost all track of her” It was obvious that the redhead was trying to not cry.
Maria's hands started to shake. No, it was impossible. They made sure no one knew about her goddaughter's existence, they made sure Natalie was safe and just because she decided to accept that last minute mission her little dinosour had been taken.
It was all her fault…
She wasn't sure what was worse. Thinking that the little redhead was dead or now knowing that Natalie was actually taken to that horrible place. Natasha had told her some of the stuff they forced her to do on the red room and it was terrible.
Sure, Maria was glad her little dinosour was actually alive but god knows what she was currently doing or what did she think about them or even if she remembered them. Natalie was still a little baby when they kidnapped her.
That adorable tiny bundle of joy she adored, the only kid Maria didn't find annoying, one of her favorite people in the whole world, one of the reasons she would wake up every morning had suffered because of her. Just because Auntie Masha wanted to go to that stupid mission.
It felt like a kick on the ribs, she didn't know what to say. Maria felt some tears falling from her eyes but quickly wiped them out. “Natasha… I don't know what to say. Are you okay?” The blue-eyed woman asked as she spared a quick glance towards her redhead friend.
Natasha shurged and shook her head “I don't know, it's a lot to take in. I don't want to think about it, I just want my baby back. That's all” The redhead rushed to say and Maria nodded.
She could understand why, the blue-eyed woman could tell Natasha was feeling extremely guilty and wanted time to proccess all the new information. The rest of the trip was filled by a slightly comfortable silence and Yelena's snores who had fallen asleep due to the drugs on her system.
A couple of hours later they were finally back in America and in Maria's small apartment and in search of a seventeen year old girl who goes by Kate Bishop and they weren't going to lie, it was hard to look for someone who you didn't actually know how she currently looked like.
All they knew was what Yelena had told them. She was a girl with pale skin, long wavy dark hair and blue eyes and there was a lot of people with that description in New York. The three of them search for hours but there was no trace of the young girl. It was as she was wiped out of existence until after some hours, Maria was successful.
“Ha! I found something!” The officer exclaimed and Natasha and the blonde rushed to her side. It wasn't much information. There was a picture of a brunette girl looking straight to the camera.
“Is that her?” Natasha asked to her sister and Yelena nodded with a frown on her face and the redhead gasped “she's so beautiful…” she murmured with tears on her eyes.
As they read they discovered it was the website of an orphanage located in New York. Manhattan's Orphanage for young girls. They read, it was a ridiculous name and the information was vague.
There was the exact direction of the orphanage and below, there was “Kate's” information and picture.
Katherine Elizabeth Bishop
Born the 21stof November, 2008
17 years old
And then some back story, nothing relevant to find the kid. Well, it look like tomorrow there's was a lot to do. Natasha was still shocked at seeing her daughter's face for the first time in sixteen years, she looked so different… it was impressive. After some time of planning they all agreed to wait till tomorrow to go to the orphanage and get the teen. The three of them needed some rest.
Tomorrow was going to be a long day after all…
