Chapter Text
Mei knelt on the floor, the weight of nineteen years pressing down on her like a stone. She couldn't bring herself to look at Yuzu, the beautiful blonde who had become her everything over these long, precious, yet anxious months. As fear spiraled within her, a desperate urge to flee gripped her heart—she wanted to escape, to hurl herself through a window, to find oblivion rather than face any more suffering. But her knees remained rooted to the ground, trapped beneath the burden of pain and grief.
But something stronger than her desire to run radiated from the girl before her. Yuzu steadied herself, her hands moving instinctively to lift Mei's wet, trembling face. "Mei, look at me," she urged softly, a tremor in her voice. Gently, she raised Mei's chin until their eyes finally met—an unbroken gaze that promised understanding. "Forgive you? Forgive you for what?" Yuzu's tone was unwavering. "You’re not a freak. You’re beautiful. You’re Mei. And I love you. Nothing... nothing will change that."
Dumbfounded, Mei stared up at her, the enormity of Yuzu's simple declaration washing over her like a cleansing wave after a storm. "You... you mean that?"
Yuzu's grip on Mei’s face tightened with certainty. "I mean it more than anything." She knelt beside the shaking girl, enveloping her in a tight embrace that allowed Mei to hide her face in Yuzu’s shoulder as relief, fear, and love spilled from her in broken, half-formed words.
Holding Mei close, Yuzu felt her own heart ache—not from fear or disgust, but from a fierce tenderness that enveloped her, something she had scarce known she was capable of. She pulled back slightly, fixing her gaze on Mei's eyes. "You trusted me with this hidden part of your life. That's an incredible gift." Yuzu squeezed Mei's hand, her warmth a tangible anchor. "Sharing the truth like this... it’s the bravest thing you could possibly do."
With a gentle stroke, she brushed away a stray tear from Mei's cheek. "You don’t have to carry this alone anymore. We can face it together. You never have to hide from me."
Mei nodded slowly, drawing a shaky breath as she tried to absorb the impossible reality of such unconditional acceptance. "But... what if it’s going to end up being too much? What if later, you see me differently? I’ve hidden this for so long... maybe..."
Yuzu shook her head. "That’s fear talking. You’re not a burden. You’re everything to me." Tenderly, she tucked a strand of hair behind Mei’s ear. "I see you—not just this part that has tormented you. You are so much more than that. You're the most drop-dead gorgeous girl I've ever known, and better than that, you have a beautiful mind and soul, and so much love to give."
Mei felt her heart swell, the relief almost overwhelming. "I just... I wish I could erase it. Erase the pain, the hiding. But navigating this identity, this body... the thought of doing it without you... losing you..." Her voice cracked, a confession heavy with weight. "You’re the most important person in my life, Yuzu. The thought of losing you is unbearable."
"You won’t lose me," Yuzu promised, tilting Mei's face up gently. "You’ve shown me your heart—all of it. And I treasure it." Her eyes held Mei’s, filled with unwavering love. "No secret, no fear... nothing is worth either of us losing what we have. Please believe that."
Clinging to Yuzu's words, Mei felt a fragile thread of hope within her, but uncertainty still coiled tightly in her chest. "You... you really mean that?" she whispered, feeling the weight of her question. "Even after everything I just told you? Knowing what I... hid?"
Yuzu searched for the right words, her gaze unwavering. "The only thing that matters is how you feel about yourself.' she finally said. 'This doesn’t change the way I love you. If anything, it helps me understand you better."
As Mei released the breath she hadn’t known she was holding, a sudden lightness enveloped her, peeling away layers of fear that had weighed heavily upon her heart. Yet, beneath that fleeting balm, a maelstrom of emotions churned, threatening to swallow her whole. “If I ever feel lost… or afraid... Or if you ever feel the same...” she stammered, voice trembling, “can we just… talk? About anything? Because, I swear, I want to be everything you need. I want to give all of this back.” The weight of her confession hung in the air, open, and palpable.
“Always,” she promised, drawing her lover into a warm embrace that felt like coming home. “You can always share your worries with me. Always.”
Relishing the security of the other's hold, Mei leaned in, her body trembling with the depth of Yuzu’s devotion. In that moment, a silent vow settled within her—she would find a way, one day, to reciprocate this boundless acceptance. “Thank you for accepting me, Yuzu,” she whispered, heat flooding her cheeks. “I still don’t know what comes next, but knowing you’re here… I think I can face it. Damn - I sound so fucking helpless!... and I'm not! You know that...”
“Stop,” Yuzu murmured, tightening her embrace, her voice a gentle caress against Mei’s hair. “I've seen it in action! You are not weak. You are the strongest person I know for getting this far, for carrying all of this. And just look at us now—after this moment, we know so much more about each other. Our love just took a giant leap.” A soft, amazed laugh vibrated through Yuzu’s chest, reverberating in Mei’s. Clinging to her, she felt a profound sense of awe flood through her. "My Yuzu", she thought.
A treasure with a heart that glowed like a star of hopes and dreams, and a depth of understanding she never could have anticipated.
Time slipped away as they remained wrapped in each other’s warmth, breathing in the comfort of their shared silence, only the distant hum of the city marking the passage of time. When Yuzu finally stirred, rising first, she took Mei’s hand, leading her past the threshold of the bedroom to a small, partially open door nestled in the hallway.
Crossing into the space, Mei felt the air shift around them, softer and imbued with a warmth that lingered. Fairy lights twinkled above, casting gentle shadows on an inviting array of mismatched cushions strewn about the floor. The familiar scent of citrus clung to the air, wrapping her in a comforting embrace.
“This is my favorite place,” Yuzu shared, her voice dropping to a hushed whisper as she turned to Mei, eyes glimmering with tenderness. “My sanctuary. I wanted to show you.”
Stepping into this cozy alcove, Mei’s heart swelled with quiet wonder and deep affection. “It… it’s beautiful, Yuzu,” she breathed, taking in the inviting space with newfound eyes.
Yuzu’s shy smile revealed the flush of her cheeks as she ventured, “I thought… maybe we could share it tonight. Talk, read together, or just… be.” Her gaze intensified, sparking a warmth that caught Mei off guard. “Just be here. With me.”
Mei's cheeks burned in response, mirroring Yuzu’s warmth. “Even if I’m…?”
Before she finished her thought, Yuzu closed the small distance between them, kissing her with tenderness and passion. The connection echoed with longing, acceptance, and a promise of the future Mei desperately wished to build. When they broke apart, a trembling stir coursed through Mei—not from fear, but from the raw honesty of Yuzu’s touch. “I’d love that, Yuzu,” she whispered, sinking onto a thick cushion, feeling the soft fabric offer solace amid the intensity of the moment. Yuzu settled beside her, their knees brushing, igniting an even more intimate warmth between them.
With a newfound seriousness, Yuzu tightened her grip. “Now,” she began, her voice low and resolute, “tell me everything. About… all of it. The law, how you feel. I want to understand. Completely.”
Taking a shaky breath, Mei felt overwhelmed by Yuzu’s willingness to engage with the most guarded pain in her life. “Here in Japan,” she started, her voice shaky, “changing your legal gender… it requires a host of legal formalities. Even with… with my chromosomes, the fact that my body is…” she gestured vaguely, frustration twisting her expression, “Functionally female. The fact it is not a gender change. The law focuses on… a specific physical attribute. What my doctor refers to as a ‘non-malignant growth.’ It's simply a useless mass of... tissue.” Her voice rasped on the last word, a raw edge creeping into her tone. “And that’s unfortunately not how the law sees it. It’s seen as more significant than who I truly am. That lump of genetic baggage receives more rights than me! Do you see where my sympathy for transgender people comes from?”
“I thought they were strange at first, but when you explained it to me… it changed my mind, and heart. You helped me see them in a different light,” Yuzu affirmed, her eyes warm with understanding. “And, I thank you for that. But please, go on.”
Mei took a moment to prepare herself again. “I have to be twenty to even begin the process—that’s still a year away. It’s a simple surgery, really; like removing any other growth because the… organ… is only a superficial connection, with a venous supply. The doctor told me he's removed growths many times larger, A few times they were pieces of material from a fraternal twin never to be, like mine. One of them was full of hair and teeth!” she finished with a shake of her head, gauging Yuzu's reaction. Nothing but sympathy and love looked from those warm eyes. Mei paused, gathering her thoughts, “And even then, I need a diagnosis for ‘Gender Identity Disorder,’ even though I don’t have a dysmorphic disorder. My doctor is trying to find someone sympathetic to navigate that…”
In the soft illumination of fairy lights, Yuzu’s grip tightened around Mei’s hands, her eyes ablaze with a fierce protectiveness. "That’s... fucked up," she growled, her voice edged with indignation. "They’re reducing you to... to that? Ignoring who you are and focusing on some label?"
Mei nodded, the stinging bitterness of being misunderstood solidifying into a newfound resolve. "Exactly. They see my growth and assign me 'male.' It doesn’t matter that I am a woman—that I've always been a woman. It’s as if they’re trying to force me into a box that doesn’t even exist." She met Yuzu’s gaze, a flicker of the vulnerability she usually guarded surfacing. "This isn’t a disorder. I was called a freak when I tried to confess once. But… I’m just… me."
Yuzu leaned closer, her breath mingling with Mei’s as she bridged the small gap between them. "No," she replied, voice thick with emotion, "you are absolutely not a freak. That’s a nasty word used by vile people. You’re my Mei—a beautiful soul who deserves to be seen and loved for who you truly are." Her fingers brushed Mei’s cheeks—a feather-light touch that sent a shiver racing down her spine. "This fight? This burden they’ve placed upon you? It’s not yours to bear alone."
Tears brimmed in Mei’s eyes, the weight of years spent in doubt lightening under Yuzu’s fierce conviction. "What if it’s too much?" she whispered, fear slipping through her defenses. "What if... you regret this? Us?"
Yuzu’s gaze remained steady, resolute. She leaned in, resting her forehead against Mei’s, their breaths entwined. "I fell in love with you," she said softly. "Every piece of you. There’s nothing about you that would ever make me leave. Nothing. I love you."
The tears that fell from Mei’s eyes were different this time—shimmering with gratitude and relief. "Oh, Yuzu," she choked, the name escaping her like a prayer. "You have no idea..."
Yuzu's gentle hand traced the curve of Mei’s jaw, her touch a promise of safety. "I want you to feel safe. Completely safe. You can tell me anything, always."
A shaky breath escaped Mei, vulnerability spilling into the space between them. "I’ve been terrified of this—of telling you, of seeing that look, that label in your eyes." She leaned into the embrace, warmth enveloping her like a cocoon. "But with you... it feels like... I can finally just be. No hiding."
Yuzu’s expression deepened, fierce and unyielding. "That's all I want," she murmured, raw vulnerability threading through her voice. "For you to be you. That’s who I fell in love with—not a label, not what some stupid law says—just you."
The warmth inside Mei swelled, pushing back the years of isolation.. A fierce love ignited within Mei, not merely a desire to protect Yuzu, but a wish to uplift this incredible woman who was offering her everything. "God," she breathed, heart racing with newfound passion. "I’ve never felt this way before—so safe, and I want to be everything you need, too."
"Good," Yuzu replied, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind Mei’s ear, tilting her chin up. "Because that’s what this is—being everything for one another."
As Yuzu lifted her head and captured Mei’s lips in a tender kiss once more, the world outside faded into obscurity. In that breath, there was a silent vow exchanged—a connection that transcended words. It wasn’t desperate or demanding, but soft and deep, a melding of their spirits in the private universe they’d created together.
Mei returned it with fervor. When they finally pulled away, her cheeks were flushed, eyes wide with newfound clarity. "My life," she lingered on the words, "is yours. Ours." The solemn promise hung in the air, warm and thick, as Mei felt a surge of positivity replacing trepidation.
Yuzu cupped Mei's face, tracing the curve of her jaw with gentle fingers. "That’s it, Mei. That’s the real thing. Feeling strong enough to protect someone else because you feel safe yourself. That’s all I want from you, honey. For you to be free to be yourself, to express that strength and love that fills you. You deserve it completely."
Mei captured Yuzu’s hand, holding it tightly, determination in her voice. "And you," she insisted, "you deserve it all—more than me. If I ever miss something—if I’m ever too dense to see what you want—just tell me, okay?"
A knowing smile spread across Yuzu’s face, joy radiating from her gaze. "Oh, I will," she replied, her voice dropping conspiratorially. "Believe me, I absolutely will."
As they nestled into the embrace of the soft cushions, the two lovers found solace in the gentle intertwining of their fingers—roots merging to create a profound union. The silence that enveloped them was not hollow; it brimmed with unspoken understanding, shared glances, and the rhythmic symphony of their joined heartbeats. Mei's throat tightened at the weight of Yuzu's unwavering love and support, an overwhelming sensation that swept over her. Tears threatened to spill from her eyes once more, but they were not tears of sorrow; instead, they radiated the ache of gratitude, a powerful sense of belonging anchoring itself deep within her.
“Thank you,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “For seeing me. For believing in me, even when I falter. For… everything. I honestly don’t know what I would do without you.”
Rather than responding with mere words, Yuzu leaned in closer, her presence an intoxicating warmth. She brushed her lips softly against Mei’s temple, tracing a delicate path along her elegant, pale cheek, then exploring the sensitive skin of her neck. A shiver raced up Mei's spine, her skin warming, pooling into a potent longing. The fairy lights around them blurred, and the world outside melted away, leaving only the intoxicating sensation of the delicate touch and the gentle hum of the blonde's breath against her soft, pale skin. She swore she could feel Yuzu’s awareness of the shift, the way her eyes sparkled knowingly as the heat bloomed in her cheeks as she pulled back slightly, a familiar, playful mischief making itself known in her gaze, complemented by a smile that could knock the breath from anyone. Her voice dropped to a sultry whisper, each word wrapping around her like a warm embrace, igniting a thrill that curled in her belly.
“You’ll never have to find out,” she affirmed, the possessive undertone both thrilling and reassuring to Mei. “Because I’m not going anywhere. Not ever.”
Yuzu let the weight of her eternal promise settle between them, an unspoken bond tightening around their hearts more than any vow could. With a knowing glint illuminating her eyes, her smile morphed into something undeniably enticing as she teased the culmination of their earlier conversations.
“And now, Mei…” Yuzu’s fingers glided down Mei's arm, igniting electric sensations with each delicate touch. “…about that whole thing concerning telling you exactly what I need?”
The question lingered in the air, heavy with unspoken desire, hinting at a future rich with intimacy. Under the soft glow of fairy lights, wrapped in an atmosphere of love and connection, Mei felt her heart respond—a resounding, breathless yes. She offered an answering kiss, warm, wet and exciting, that left them both moaning. Her hand trembled slightly as she reached out for the light switch.
"Do you want it darker?" she asked enticingly...
