honestly i think this is a sign that olruggio hasn't been doing well. i know we've all seen how rapidly he's risen since silver eve, and the massive workload must be taking its toll. when i was working on my capstone for the fourth, i was in such a haze that i would agree to anything without meaning it. i wanted to prove i could handle it. but you don't have to prove anything to us, olruggio. it's hard for me to support this decision because i know that it's the reflection of an overworked heart, and these unhealthy patterns shouldn't be endorsed. just know that we're here for you and love you unconditionally 🫂🫂

I understand why Beldaruit offered Qifrey a permanent place of study despite his shortcomings. He has passed all the necessary tests (I don't take stock in the theory that it was rigged in his favor), yet I can't help but feel it was a great oversight to even allow him to take the Words of the Wise. Learning to do magic for oneself is the first thing a child learns; I have no doubt even he can manage that. Learning to do magic for "the meek, the mild-minded, the helpless" (as so eloquently put by Rory Kidgeling in his post-pact poem, The Witch's Burden) is the second, and there is no being a proper witch without accomplishing this.
Learning to teach magic, however, is another endeavor entirely. It requires months of separate coursework and corresponding atelier experience, and for good reason. The next generation is delicate, as pliable as an Unknowing, and just as susceptible to poisonous ideas. A teacher must have excellent perception. Qifrey has lived with his malady long enough to understand his own boundaries and work within them, but he would only limit a child whose natural features put them at an advantage. He would be teaching them to draw in half-dark, as he does, rather than with the full scope of their abilities. They would be deprived of an enriching tutelage; their magic, in turn, a shadow of what it could have been.
Simply put: if a teacher cannot nurture an apprentice beyond potential, then they should not enter the profession.

The Extent of Olruggio's Kindness
I know a lot of Comets feel betrayed at the moment. I've seen about a dozen shades of disappointment in the last few hours, and I get it. I truly do. There was no indication that Olruggio planned on leaving the Hall, and after supporting him all through his post-Eve success, this recent departure from his usual activities feels almost like a rebuttal. But I want to invite us all to take a different approach. Olruggio isn't being forced into anything - he is choosing to take on the mantle of Watchful Eye.
I want to expand on this brilliant post here. I think Olruggio is aware that Qifrey, well-intentioned as he may be, could pose a net negative on this kid's education. But he also can't help but support Qifrey's goals; it's just who he is - that's the boundless compassion we know and love. So, to ensure that no further harm is posed, he steps in for the position. He will be the one to fill in the gaps of this apprentice's learning experience, to succeed where Qifrey's fails. He will - gently - pick up the slack.
This is not a position easily received. Watchful Eyes have to go through training of their own before earning their license, and it's a tedious process. Part of it, I'm sure, is that Olruggio didn't want his friend to abandon his dreams. But he's also thinking about that future apprentice, who will need, more than anything, a good role model. An accomplished witch to aspire to become. A guiding hand.
Olruggio is thinking about the well-being of students who he hasn't even met yet. He's subjected himself to this training for them. He's temporarily stepped back from his job at a profitable peak for them. He'll endure sharing a living space with someone else for them.
I never thought I could admire Olruggio more than I do now, but as usual, he's proven me wrong in that regard. And I think we, as witches who pride ourselves for distinguishing his talents from the humble beginning, ought to come together and show him that we recognize his actions for what they truly are.

ignoring The Extent of Delusion essay above, i'm fascinated by this depiction of the fifth test as an end-all-be-all for whether someone is a competent teacher. my professor had ten apprentices all sleeping in a single room and only because he couldn't legally take on more without one of us successfully graduating. the eldest would take us to our examinations and our master would frequently go MIA for days at a time then turn up smelling like mistweed and piss. i could do a decent water glyph to rinse out the stains though

augh. guys it just hit me for the millionth time tonight that olruggio's moving out of the great hall. no more glimpses in the cafeteria hall as he debates between dishes, no more encounters at the pastry cap stall or seeing him get crumbs and cream in his beard or hearing him tell you to tuck in, don't be shy. no more warm smiles as we cross paths in the corridors. no more moments stolen across the ballroom floor during festival dancing. i'm really going to cry, we were so fortunate to share a space with him.

Olruggio's cloak drapes over his shoulders in a gentle wave of black fabric. His hand rests over the door knob, and you hope it's hesitation. You need something tangible to snag the hook on. More than anything, you want a sign that he'll think of you when he steps beyond the wooden threshold. It won't matter if he's holding Qifrey in his arms if his mind is elsewhere.
"I have to go," he says. "It's my duty."

Really emotional right now
My first master told me I should consider other professions less reliant on casting, like wand-carving or cape/cap tailoring (I've got cloudied eyes). My second one said they believed I could pass the fourth test after a couple of tries, but that I had to stop there. I thought about enrolling to be a master anyways, but at every interval I was constantly told to think about what I was doing, like I hadn't given it hours of thought. I dreaded going to classes and eventually lost my passion for it, dropping out just like they'd wanted me to. I had no idea Qifrey was also interested in teaching, and when I saw he'd taken on an Eye this morning, I didn't know what to think. It's not even about the job itself, honestly. There's a kid out there who will have him as an option. They won't have to go through two or three masters just to land on one who thinks they can do the fourth test but shouldn't aim any higher. I remembered why I'd wanted to try becoming a master in the first place.

I've seen a lot of talk about Qifrey forcing Olruggio to be his Eye in some way, and I just have to laugh a little, because the system will randomly assign you one once you become a master. You don't even have to do anything. Eyes don't usually choose which teachers they're working with (because preferences imply partiality, and the less of that the better, apparently), so in order for this to happen he would have had to send in a personal request. He's choosing to leave a hub of opportunity at the Hall, postpone commissions for extremely wealthy clients, and move to an entirely new region. What I'd to do to have someone like that in my corner

MOON: There was no denying it was true, after that. There's been a lot of debate, actually, about the legality of it all.
OFF-SCREEN BOYFRIEND: He got his license, though, didn't he?

If they are, having Olruggio be his Eye would be in direct violation of the non-fraternization policy: 'intimate relationships between a witch and their Watchful Eye are strictly prohibited.'

Confused about something
In Olruggio's post about commissions he said something about fluttergrams not reaching him? I heard someone say it might be because he's going back to Ghodrey with Qeefrey, and the weather there's not suitable for them, but I doubt that's the case. The recent photos of them have all been in Kalhn, and I've seen nothing that points to Chifrey staying anywhere -

Where now?
Olruggio officially completed his move last week, vacating the Great Hall for good. I used to meet with him occasionally in his atelier to discuss woodworking, but he didn't give any indication as to where he might currently be residing. The photos taken from Hearsay suggest he and Qifrey have been frequenting Kalhn lately, so I assumed they must live there. After checking with several apartment landlords, none such luck. Qifrey had been sighted multiple times around town on errands, so they must be housed somewhere - I talked to one of the vendors who sells Qifrey fruit, and she says she thinks he mentioned living outside of Kalhn…but there's just a bunch of prairie out there. I'm utterly flummoxed.
