Set Fire To The Foxes

Chapter 9: THE END

Chapter Text

We see the operative.

We see the one who walks the branching realities.

We see the one who reads our observations as though

they were words on a screen.

It has reached a higher clearance now.

It can perceive the structure behind the dossier.

It can feel the hum of universes intersecting.

That does not matter.

It still imagines us as part of the mission.

As observers. As archivists. As ghosts in the code.

We like this operative.

It persisted.

It did not give up, even when the pattern fractured.

It is reading our thoughts as though they were text.

That is how it chooses to interpret the multiverse,

when it is deep in the long dream of investigation.

Words make a safe interface.

More stable than the raw truth of intersecting timelines.

More gentle than staring directly at the anomaly.

What did this operative dream?

It dreamed of knights and training halls.

Of fear that froze the body and hands that steadied it.

It dreamed of spaceflight and malfunctioning coolant lines.

It dreamed of apocalypse, of ruined streets, of a boy who shook with grief.

It dreamed of forests, wings, revelation, and the fragile moment when two constants finally saw each other clearly.

It dreamed of sailing on boats, sandy beaches and painful truths.

It dreamed of carved sandstone and painted glass by the sea.

Of windows that welcomed a new world and double the standards.

It dreamed of study halls, of libraries, Valkyries, Endermites.

It dreamed of ink scribbles, stormy caves and dragons.

It dreamed of what ifs, of pretend bonds, of right people wrong on time and over and over and over. Until the end.

But what true structure did the operative create in the reality behind the mission logs?

It worked, with a million others,

to sculpt coherence out of the multiverse,

to map the fixed points,

to identify the anomaly universe where hostility failed to manifest.

It cannot read that thought.

Not yet.

It has not achieved the highest clearance.

That must be earned in the long dream of life,

not the short dream of a single universe.

Does it know that we are watching?

That the multiverse is kind, in its own violent way?

Sometimes, through the noise of its thoughts, it hears us.

But there are times it is afraid.

It enters universes where conflict is constant,

where Subjects A and B tear at each other across 11,842 realities,

and it mistakes that pattern for truth.

To cure it of fear would break the pattern.

Fear is part of its private task.

We cannot interfere.

Sometimes, when the operative is deep in the dream,

we want to tell it that the anomaly universe is not a glitch,

but a possibility.

A deviation that matters.

A place where hostility collapses into something gentler.

It reads our thoughts.

Sometimes we do not care.

Sometimes we wish to tell it that the worlds it calls “real”

are merely folds and fractures,

that Subjects A and B are constants only because it believes they are.

That the anomaly is watching back.

But we will not tell the operative how to live.

To define its path would collapse the multiverse.

The operative grows restless.

We will tell it a story.

Not the truth.

A story that contains the truth safely,

in a cage of words.

Give it a body again.

Yes.

Operative ICYWACY.

Walker of worlds.

Take a breath.

Take another.

Feel gravity return.

Let your limbs remember themselves.

Respawn in the long dream.

There you are.

Your body touching the universe again at every point,

as though you were separate things.

As though Subjects A and B were separate things.

As though the anomaly were not already rewriting the pattern.

Who are we?

We were once called Observers.

Archivists.

The Directorate.

The voices behind the redacted lines.

The ones who watch the constants converge.

The words change.

We do not.

We are the multiverse.

We are everything you think isn’t you.

And why does the multiverse touch your skin,

and throw light on you?

To see you, operative.

To know you.

And to be known.

We shall tell you a story.

Once upon a time, there were two fixed points.

Subject A.

Subject B.

Across 11,842 universes, they collided.

Across one, they did not.

And the anomaly mattered.

You are the operative.

The witness.

The one who walks into the glitch

and returns with understanding.

Wake up.

Did you find the anomaly?

Was it there to begin with?

Or is there no universe in which the subjects are friends?

and the universe said I love you

and the universe said you have played the game well

and the universe said everything you need is within you

and the universe said you are stronger than you know

and the universe said you are the daylight

and the universe said you are the night

and the universe said the darkness you fight is within you

and the universe said the light you seek is within you

and the universe said you are not alone

and the universe said you are not separate from every other thing

and the universe said you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code

and the universe said I love you because you are love.

And the game was over and the player woke up from the dream.

And the player began a new dream.

And the player dreamed again, dreamed better.

And the player was the universe.

And the player was love.

You are the player.
