Chapter Text
Dating Todoroki Shoto is definitely an experience for Izuku.
He’s never really been the jealous type when it came to dating. The people he’s dated before were “plain” as some people would describe him as well. Plain looking couple, in a plain old town somewhere in Japan.
Dating Todoroki is very different though. His boyfriend is liked— loved by just about every student in their school. He’s handsome, and kind, soft spoken, and well mannered. He’s charming without even trying, even Izuku would've had a crush on him if they had never become friends.
Todoroki is just… well some people say perfect, and Izuku would have to agree. His boyfriend is perfect, the entire package.
So it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that the love confessions, and the gifts don’t stop, even after they begin dating.
It doesn’t bother Izuku at first. At first.
But, if he was being honest, he feels like the people at school don’t take their relationship seriously enough for them not to offer gifts to Todoroki, right in front of his boyfriend.
It was either they didn’t care, or they just didn’t think they were actually dating. It was beginning to rub Izuku the wrong way.
He hates feeling jealous. He shouldn’t feel insecure in his own relationship. Todoroki likes him , not anyone else. That’s why they’re dating, that’s why they hold hands when they walk home together. They do that with each other .
Todoroki chose him , and Izuku allowed it.
So why is he so scared of losing him?
The next time someone offers Todoroki a gift, it’s more extravagant than anything he’s ever been given by one of their fellow classmates.
Izuku is right there, of course, as the girl pulls out a silver necklace with Todoroki’s initials engraved on it.
To be fair, his boyfriend does look shocked at the (probably expensive) gift. Izuku glares at the floor, suddenly feeling like a ghost.
He has the right to say something, doesn't he? Todoroki is his boyfriend, not everyone else’s. He has the right to be jealous, right?
Izuku shuffles forward, and takes Todoroki’s hand, interlocking their fingers, making a show out of it. The girl's eyes widen as her eyes follow their hands, and realization seems to dawn on her just then.
“Y-You— T-Todoroki-sama h-h-has a b-boyfriend?!” She squeals, covering her face in embarrassment.
Todoroki seems to snap out of his shock. “Ah, y-yes, I do. Your gift is lovely, but I’m afraid I can’t accept it.”
The girl shakes her head. “Don’t b-b-be sorry! I sh-shouldn’t have even offered!” Then she turns to Izuku, looking more apologetic than he’s ever seen someone look. “I’m so sorry, Midoriya-kun!”
Izuku smiles softly, feeling a slight sense of pride twinge in his chest. “It’s fine. No hard feelings.” He says, standing closer to Todoroki.
The group of people forming around them disband as soon as the girl utters one more apology before swiftly walking away from them.
Todoroki squeezes his hand, and Izuku glances over at him. “Sorry. I know it’s weird that I still receive gifts, but I always reject them. And I try not to be so mean about it when I do.”
Izuku lets some of the tension out of his shoulders. His boyfriend is kind, he forgets that sometimes. “It’s— well it does bother me, but I guess I’ll just have to deal with it, since I’m dating you.” He sighs, and then stands on his tiptoes to place a kiss on Todoroki’s cheek.
“I have to go talk to Aizawa sensei about a test, I’ll see you in class.” He says, before letting go of his boyfriend's hand and turning away from him.
He completely misses the look of worry that flashes in heterochromatic eyes.
Shoto feels like Midoriya is upset with him. Ever since the ‘necklace’ incident he’s been more reserved. Midoriya was rarely ever quiet, so it immediately rang about five alarms in Shoto’s head.
If Midoriya was mad about the necklace, well Shoto couldn’t blame him. Constantly having to watch your boyfriend be admired by just about everyone he ran into must be… exhausting.
If the roles were reversed, Shoto would’ve been green with envy. He can’t even imagine how Midoriya’s holding up.
Probably badly, he thinks bitterly.
He sighs loudly, putting down his pencil and slamming his forehead on the built in desk in his room.
Shoto very much likes being in a relationship with Midoriya. He’s funny, and kind, adorable, and talkative. He’s not afraid of asking for what he wants. Shoto likes that about him most. That’s how they ended up together in the first place.
He’s proved himself worthy of loving Midoriya. The flowers, lunch, offering his help whenever he can. Is Midoriya having doubts about them? About Shoto?
They’ve only just started officially dating, it’s almost been a month since their first kiss, and things were already not looking so good.
This is something Shoto could fix. People listened to him, all he had to do was say the word.
From now on, he won’t tolerate even the offering of gifts or love confessions.
He needs Midoriya to know just how much he cares about him.
“You should start calling me Shoto. Everyone else calls me Todoroki.”
Izuku blinks in surprise, chopsticks halfway to his mouth. “Wh-Where..” He clears his throat, setting down his utensils. “Where did that come from?”
First name basis?!
Todoroki shrugs, looking off to the side of the school's rooftop. “Well, you’re not everyone else. You’re my boyfriend, so I just thought you’d like it if we called each other by our first names. We d-don’t have to, though. I was just.. saying.”
Izuku has to contain the scream that almost comes out of his mouth. My boyfriend. The sound of that makes his stomach flutter.
“I want to!” He says, noticing his silence was making his boyfriend more nervous. “I would like to start calling you by your first name. You can call me Izuku, if you want.”
Shoto ( Shoto?!?! ) smiles and nods. “ Izuku .”
The sound of his first name in his boyfriend’s voice does things to Izuku’s heart.
The next time a girl walks up to them in the hallways, Izuku mentally prepares himself for the uncomfortable twinge of jealousy he was sure to feel.
To his utter surprise, that doesn’t happen.
Shoto grabs his hand, interlocks their fingers, and tells the girl, “I have a boyfriend.” And then walks past her after sending her an apologetic smile.
Izuku is dragged along behind him, fingers still interlocked, absolutely baffled.
Shoto turns to peer at him over his shoulder and sends him a cheeky smile.
Izuku realizes his intention then. And it makes his heart soar.
The insecurity he felt at first melts away in an instant. Shoto likes him , and that’s all he really needed to know.
