-Frisk’s Journey Part 3-

Snowdin

Snowdin itself was a welcomed sight. Thick snow covered every surface; the perfect consistency for making snowmen out of and having snowball fights without the fear of the flakes clinging to your clothing. Strings of lights were strewn about, colorful illuminating bulbs which made the snow sparkle and glow with a multi-colored hue.

You smiled as you read the familiar sign greeting you to the little town in the coldest part of the Underground.

Some monster, most of them the fuzzy variety, sauntered about completing their daily tasks. There seemed to be a few more than you remember from the past resets… More monster, more buildings.

More skeleton…

You try not to think about how you may be the reasoning behind that. You broke something but it somehow managed to fix itself…?

You took your first steps into the town you never were in yet somehow knew all too well, deciding to visit the shopkeeper bunny first. You should stock up on supplies in case things went awry.

She greeted you like normal; warm with a bit of curiosity upon seeing a new face in their tiny town. She did not realize you were a human. Like most monster, she had never seen one before, only hearing tales of your kind passed down from the war; tales of scary creatures hellbent on destroying the monster race, tales of powerful souls whom could overcome death and had the magic which sealed them all away but which could also SAVE them from this sunless fate.

The shop itself had a quaint cozy vibe. It was warm compared to the weather outside with various wares laid out for shoppers to choose from behind thin glass displays; mostly food items though there were some other random trinkets such as a bandanna and a shovel, one case even held several different sized glowing crystals. Behind the shopkeeper, pinned upon the wall, resided a long purple cloth with the Delta Rune you remembered seeing embroidered on Toriel’s dress depicted upon it.

You bought a few cinnamon bunnies because they smelled delectable and made your mouth water. After which you began asking the shopkeeper various questions about the skeletons. You just had to find out more about your dream prince Parz!

Oh, the skeleton brothers?” She made a sound that could have been either a huff or a partial chuckle. “They just showed up one day and have been a part of our little community ever since. They sure do keep things lively around here.” A small smile graced her face. “You’ll run into them at some point or another.”

You nodded, munching on one of the sweet treats and asked about Parz specifically.

Ah, well, he is quite an uhh… imposing young man,” the shopkeeper spoke out slowly. “He seems very interested in joining the Royal Guard but everyone around here wonders if it’s the right place for him. He is a good soul though I suppose he can come across rather impertinent.” She paused, giving a small shake of her head which caused her plump ears to flop slightly against her hat. “It’s almost like he has trouble seeing things from another person’s perspective. Though he has good intentions and cares deeply for his brothers despite their bickering.”

A hard shell with a soft heart. Perfect!

You sighed out dreamingly. You two just had to get to know one another better and then things would be fine, this you were sure of!

The shopkeeper chuckled at your obvious display of being smitten. “Don’t get your hopes to high, hon. He’s broken plenty of hearts here already without meaning to.” She shruged lightly. “He hasn’t shown any interest in dating as far as I’m aware.”

You gave her a reassured nod. It was still worth the try!

In turn, she just gave you a doubtful look.

You decided to change the subject, asking about the Delta Rune next.

Oh that old thing? That is the royal sign,” she replied. “It represents a very old legend.”

You asked about the legend.

About the Underground,” the answer came softly. “It is said that one day an angel from the surface will come down to us bringing hope and light with them and this will lead us to freedom. It’s something that gives us hope…” She trailed off, looking at the symbol behind her for a moment. “Most of us don’t mind waiting bit… we hope for the angel to come sooner rather than later.”

You nodded slowly, wondering about her sudden melancholy.

It’s just… well not everyone down here believes in the legend, you know,” she explained. “Some think it’s just something that the King made up in order to spread hope. I mean, yeah the big guy would probably do something like that but… this just seems real, you know? So, for my part, I choose to believe in it.”

You smiled softly at her words and the feeling of hope radiating from her core. You definitely never found out about this legend before.

A part of you remembers terrified voices mumbles about an angel of death, whispers in the back of your mind pushing for more, more, MORE… until there was nothing left save for the howling of the wind and utter darkness of a starless sky. Splintering of something you should not have broken.

It would be nice to finally see the surface,” the shopkeeper’s voice broke into your thoughts. “Finally see the sun and… and all of that,” she continued with a soft sigh, eyes trailing to a point outside of the window where she probably assumed the sun would be had they been on the surface and not trapped underground.

You agreed, smiling up to the bunny woman.

The thought of giving the monsters the sun fills you with determination!

You left the shop shortly after and turned to the quaint Inn next door.

You stood outside just a moment longer than necessary, glancing over the building. It seemed… bigger? At least more so than your half memory of it from before you decided to set everything right. It was decorated in green and red, covered with a light layer of snow just like all of the other buildings nestled in Snowdin. There was a warm light coming form the inside, shining through one of the windows that had the curtain drew back though it was impossible to see what lay behind the ice-covered glass. An illuminated sign stood over the door declaring the building as the “Snowdin Inn” whilst another slightly smaller sign informed that there were still vacant rooms within.

You decided to go inside.

A teenaged bunny looked up at you from the reception counter against the wall. “Oh hey there,” the bunny said out, sitting up straighter as you step closer. “You a tourist?”

You shrugged as an answer.

Just traveling through?” he continued. “Yeah, I guess that’s what most people do. The forest is a lot more interesting than out little town in most cases.”

You just smiled, thinking back on your little adventures thus far. You moved your hands, telling the bunny about meeting and playing games with the skeletons on your way here.

Ah Papyrus and Parz are at it again?” The bunny chuckled, shaking his head softly. “I went to school with them, was in a lot of classes with those two,” he continued fondly. “Parz is a bit of a hardass. Oh umm,” he seemed to remember he was speaking with a kid. “I mean umm.... sorry about that I should probably watch my language a bit. But yeah uh Parz can be tough but Papyrus is just a big marshmallow.”

You chuckled softly.

It’s rare that they go all out like that, you know? Parz isn’t usually one for shenanigan… Oh!” as if remembering something, the teenager leaned over the counter. “Say, did you see a Snowdrake out there? Uh... listens to Snowy?”

You shook your head, frowning. You half-remember somebody, puns about snow and ice. A little guy from before you... from before. But you hadn't seen him this time around.

Man,” mumbled the bunny as he sat back fully in his seat once more. “Say, if you see him can you tell him to come here? He… He lost his mom a while ago. His dad is still… well, it’s been hard on them. I’m worried about them both so… Can you tell him we got a room open for him? It’s completely on the house.”

You gave a nod.

Thanks. I told Suny to keep an eye out for him too so hopefully someone will run across the little guy,” the bunny smiled softly. “Oh I’m kind of talking your ears off here… You wanted a room?”

You shrugged. There was still the open invitation from the skeleton… and you did want to explore more of Snowdin. You decided then to shake your head and moved your hands up, telling the bunny to keep the room free in case the missing kid was found.

You left the Inn shortly afterwards and decided to wander around the little town.

You knocked on a couple of doors from the houses lining the streets but, for the most part, got no answers. Those whom did answer their doors you asked about the missing Snowdrake though sadly no one seems to have seen the little monster recently. You hope that nothing happened to him…

If you wanna search for someone, you should ask the Dog Sentries,” a friendly fox monster told you after you spoke with them. “They’re usually at Grillby’s around this time for their lunch break.”

Food and a place to warm up sounded nice.

You gave the fox monster a nod and walked towards the central brick building. A sign proclaiming the building to be “GRILLBY’S” was lit at it’s front as well as a smaller sign reading “OPEN” stuck to the front of the door. The windows were made out of some sort of dark glass which allowed you to see shadows of the people inside but not clear enough to be able to make out who they belong to.

You smiled at the thought of the cozy atmosphere inside and warm food.

Just as you reached out to grab the handle, the door flung open nearly hitting you and you were shoved back quite rudely by another too familiar looking monster.

Black leather, a glint of gold and round white bones.

You felt yourself being pulled into a fight.

Saz the skeleton blocks the way.

You shifted your gaze to the world around you as color seemed to drain away.

Once again there was a skeleton standing before you. They were short with a relaxed composure despite the annoyed look resting upon their round skull, standing with their hands shoved into the pockets of their jacket.

Golden rays of light shined down just before the world faded to black and white. Blinding blue beams, something sounding akin to lazers and the weight of your sins pressing down on your back… Eyes, one flickering bright between yellow and blue hues, watching over you unwavering; sadness tucked behind rage. The taste of blood pooling at the back of your throat as your vision turned red.

If we were ever friends, you wouldn’t come back.”

Another blink and it was gone.

The skeleton before you was different; an off colored fang, a red glint in their eyes replacing that or the multicolored singular eye, overall just seeming more… edgy than Sans. They had cracks and scars on their bones, even their clothing looked to be made of sharp angles!

The skeleton was smirking, something which would’ve fit better with a shark than a human-looking skeleton. “Hey, buddy, thought we’d have a little talk here,” growled out the skeleton. “I’m even letting you go first. Aren’t I nice?”

You gulped before giving a shrug of your shoulders. You decided on a CHECK.

Saz the Skeleton
HP 3/3
AKT 3
DEF 1

Smells like spicy mustard. You stepped on his turf.

You blinked at the odd description. Though… Saz was probably one of the skeleton brothers too! You couldn’t do much in the moment, especially since it was now his turn, but you were excited about the idea of getting to meet more skeletons.

Saz did not waste time in sending a bone attack towards you. Interestingly his patterns were similar to that of Parz’ though that meant you were barely able to avoid them. This was going to be hard!

When the attack finished, you were down to 11 HP.
Saz grinned smugly at you.

This wasn’t right. You felt as though you were missing piece of a puzzle but could not figure out what part exactly. The check had said something about ‘turf’ so… Maybe you did something wrong without meaning to?

You choose MERCY.

Hmph you don’t get it, do you,” snapped Saz back, starting his attack once more. “You should leave Snowdin real quick.”

You shook your head; you still had things that needed to be done. But first you had to figure this battle out whilst trying not to get hit too much.

You are filled with determination!

You dodged most of his attacks this time around, only taking a single hit which dropped your HP by two. You should probably eat another nicecreme but…

You choose to TALK.

You told Saz that you were sorry if you did something wrong and stated that you wished to be friends.

Friends?” the skeleton questioned, blinking. The attack he sent this time seemed slightly weaker, the patterns moving slower and more easily avoidable. “Why would you want to be friends?” Saz glared. “Is this a trick?”

You told him this was not a trick. You like Parz too and wanted to get to know the others as well!

Sadly, this only caused Saz to glare harder. “I saw you fighting my bro,” he growled. “You played a dirty trick on him.”

You told Saz that it was not a trick. You simply got him close enough to give him a smooch.

A lightning-fast attack followed your comment, knocking you down to 1 HP. Ouch!
You quickly ate your last nicecreme and prepared for Saz’ next attack.

You did my bro dirty,” the skeleton growled. “He was super embarrassed! How DARE you.” He seemed to get more frustrated that his attacks did not touch you. “COULD YOU JUST STAY STILL?!?”

You told Saz that you’d rather not. Also, you totally did not intend to do Parz dirty! You wanted to make an honest monster out of him.

THAT’S IT, YOU’RE GOING DOWN!”

You barely managed to dodge a bone that was thrown at you even though Saz’ attack phase hadn’t even began. You cried cheater but he seemed to ignore the comment.
You huffed when his attack finished and were about to select talk about when another bone hit your fingers. That was so unfair!

Saz whistled all innocently.

You selected ACT instead and looked at your options. You sighed and went for APOLOGY. You told Saz that you were sorry, it was just a bad joke. You really did not mean to embarrass Parz and if it was truly too much then you were super sorry and would never try something like that again! You just wanted to get to know the taller skeleton better because he was so cool!

Well,” mumbles Saz, shoulders drooping slightly. “My bro is the coolest…”

You agreed eagerly. He was the best! Not to mention super strong and a real gentleman. The absolute coolest!

Hell yeah he is,” agreed Saz with a nod. “But… I can’t risk it. I know what you are, what you’re capable of. You’re dangerous. I can’t… I won’t allow you to hurt my family!”

A new wave of bones rushed towards you.

Saz is filled with resolve.

You swallowed a big gulp of cold air.

Was Saz really convinced that you were dangerous?

You were. You still are. In an alternate reality you did horrible, unspeakable things. There was still the potential in you to continue to do so… You are a human. These were just simple monster awaiting within their prison.

You were drawn from thoughts as a bone slammed into you, dropping your HP down to four.
You only had a few cinnamon-bunnies left now. This was bad.

You traded turns for a period; Saz remained silent, the red glow of his eyes becoming stronger as time passed, his attacks more dangerous. There seemed to be no end in sight. You had no clue what to do.

If you choose to TALK, you only received
Saz isn’t listening.

When you tried to give him MERCY or SPARE him, he would just attack you, continuing to cheat when it wasn’t his turn or by attacking you while you were deciding what move to make.

Slowly, Saz began looking tired. He began panting between his attacks, sweat dripping down his skull despite the snow.

You were concerned.

WHY… DON’T YOU.. STAY STILL?” he huffed.

You told Saz that you wanted to be friends.

WHY DON’T YOU ATTACK? YOU… you could attack…”

You told him that you did not want to fight. You did not want to hurt him nor anyone else. You only wanted to be friends like you were with Parz and Papyrus. You wanted to be Saz’ friend too.

Saz paused at that, looking at you intensely for a moment. He reminded you of Sans again; a Sans you knew yet didn’t at the same time, another Sans whom you had fought with, a Sans who wore a look of grief mixed with rage before finally fading to just pain.
You felt a chill.

You felt as thought he could see your sins, even those which you no longer had claim to.

Saz took a shaky breath. “You… won’t?”

You shook your head, smiling widely. You told the skeleton that you would no do anything violent. You were determined not to let anyone come to harm!

Oh…” he mumbles breathlessly. “O-okay.”

Before he could do anything else, Saz fell over into the awaiting snow.

You blinked for a moment at Saz just laying there before running over to him.

For a moment you saw a skeleton sitting on the ground, sleeping and another holding his front as red gushed out.

He wasn’t hurt, at least as far as you could tell. He just seemed to be sleeping… You tested this by poking Saz slightly with the end of your stick just to be sure that it wasn’t some sort of trick.

Nothing…

You hasty spared Saz in order to end the fight. You had to get him to a safe place and find help!

You spared Saz.
You gained 0 EXP and 30 Gold.

The world around you slowly returned to normal; you both stood on the steps of Grillby’s or rather you stood, Saz was passed in front of you.
Saz looked completely out of it – eyes clothes though you weren’t sure exactly how a skeleton managed to pull that off and breathing softly. A few snowflakes had begun collecting on his skull from lack of movement.

You decided that Saz probably should not lay around in the cold temperature and should sleep somewhere warm. You tried to pick him up in order to drag him inside but that was more difficult than you first thought. The shape of a sleeping skeleton was awkward to grasp and you were, sadly, too weak to support Saz’ weight.
You did, however, manage to get Saz into a semi-sitting position whilst only dropping him once when the door suddenly opened.

A tall figure stepped out. “Ah, there you are,” said the smooth voice as you looked up. “Wait, let me take him, I know what to do.”

It was yet another skeleton, similar built like Papyrus and Parz; tall and slim thought wearing a thick hoodie and pants more like Sans. This one had gentle eye lights as he gazed upon you and his whole body resonated a chill vibe of relaxation.
The new skeleton leaned down, easily lifting Saz and holding the smaller skeleton against his chest.

Let’s get inside. He needs to rest in the warmth,” he said, opening the door with his free hand. “You look like you could use some of that yourself. Name’s Pyru, by the way,” he introduced himself. “Care to explain what you and my bro were getting into?”
