He couldn’t breathe, he couldn’t —
“You’re okay, you are okay.”
Soft hands on his shoulders, gently pushing him up so he was sitting. A warm touch up and down his spine, comforting words and gentle kisses to his temple.
He brought a hand to his chest, trying to force his breaths to slow and deepen, and after a minute or so he was able to get them to.
“What’s wrong, Jeremy? What happened?” A finger and a thumb on his chin pulled his gaze towards his partner's furrowed brow and frown.
And the last thing he had wanted to do was worry Jean, so he shook his head and put on a smile, and said, “Nothing, I’m fine. I just had a weird dream and —“
“Don’t do that. Not with me,” Jean held his gaze, not allowing Jeremy to look away. Not letting him take the easy way out.
Jeremy sighed, and Jean let his chin drop.
With his gaze on the comforted, he said, “I just —“
But then his throat closed up and his eyes heated and all he could choke out was, I’m sorry, before he was crying again.

Summary
The witch smiles and looks to Jean. "If you want to make Jeremy realize you don't hate him, you should start being around him more," she says. "I'm Laila, by the way. Jeremy and I are best friends. We grew up together back in California; he's under my protection." Jean blinks, not even having considered that possibility. "He thinks you don't like him," she continues. Jean rears back, incredulous. How could he think this? "If you want to make things better," she emphasizes, "you should probably start by being his friend."
Jean nods, brows furrowing as he considers this. "I will be his friend," he says, though he has no idea how the fuck to make that happen. "Thank you," he tells her.
Laila nods, but before she goes, she warns, "And do not overstep, pup." Jean bristles fully, then. But Laila is smiling, her dark green eyes striking. "Remember that you can't court him until he gives you his acceptance. And I strongly advise against trying to coach him on the ways of wolves. We will be watching to make sure this bond progresses naturally for humans; not just for you. Do not test us." With that, she leaves, not waiting for Jean to answer.
