Joel doesn’t remember anything beyond the outpost.
All he knows is that he was there, he lost consciousness and then he was all the way back in 2010. He woke up to his old, shitty apartment in Boston and the overwhelming feeling that he'd lost something.

Joel is somehow transported into the past, well before any of the events of the Last of Us Season One take place. Armed with the knowledge of everything that happened the first time around, he makes it his mission to find four year old Ellie, reunite his family and find a safe place for them in the Wyoming wilderness. "Sorry 'bout that, I might've forgotten to tell Maria that you guys were comin'... or stayin' for that matter." Tommy explained, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.
"Are you sure it's fine? Ellie and I can find somewhere else to stay, we don't wanna cause any trouble."
Ellie looked up at him sharply. "Joel..." she whined. They finally had a home or at least a temporary one. Why was he willing to give it up so easily?
"Really, it's fine," Tommy assured. "It's a big house for the two of us. Plus, we could use some help with the animals."
"Sheep?" Ellie asked enthusiastically with a smile on her face.
"Yes, we could also use some help with the sheep."
Ellie squealed and tugged on Joel's jacket.
One look at her smile, and he knew what his decision would be.
(OR Joel and Ellie are thrown into a world where the infection never happened and only the two of them remember the horrors they went through. They must learn to adapt to this alternate universe and try to put their traumas in the past. But it's not that easy, is it?)
