Summary
He thinks about Bucky showing up in Delacroix with a shitty Publix cake and a smile on his face, about looking into Joaquin’s operating room with Bucky at his side. He thinks about Bucky crashing on Sarah’s couch or taking Sam’s spare bedroom in DC. He thinks about every time Bucky sat next to him on the couch and left only a sliver of space between their knees, about every time Sam noticed Bucky watching him from across the room, and hadn’t looked away even after being caught.
Sam had thought a lot of things. He thought Bucky knew how important starting the Avengers was to Sam. He thought he had Bucky’s partnership, his trust—in quieter, private moments, moments he’d never tell anyone else about, he thought he even had Bucky’s devotion.
Evidently, he was wrong.

Summary
It's not exactly unprecedented for people to have wings, claws, or metal arms around here. Bucky can be forgiven for assuming Sam's wings weren't meant to be removeable. Bucky can, Sam assures him, be forgiven for a lot of other things as well. Sam appreciates the concern, though.

Sam meets Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes on a Thursday night, at a burlesque show, and how it happens is this:
It's already late, later than he should be out on a weeknight, but the theme of the show was a super hero revue and there was no way he was gonna miss that. It's loud in the venue, which is the back space of what probably used to be a warehouse right near the Gowanus Canal, and Sam's already had a few. He's up at the bar during the break, watching the act. He doesn't hear someone say, "Behind!" so when he steps away from the bar, he smashes right into the guy who'd just done the Captain America routine up on stage, and knocks his drinks to the ground.

Or, I wanted to see more stories that captured the weirdness and complexity of being queer, in your late 20s, and trying to date in Brooklyn - which is my life - so I wrote one. Takes place in the MCU.
