And when Alec kisses him, his full lips swollen and hot against his inner thigh, staring at him through those long lashes, a challenging smirk quirking his mouth to one side, time stops for Magnus.
He reaches out, slow and tentative, afraid to let go of the moment just yet. Afraid, because the brazen lust and greed and want in Alec’s eyes, all for him, will very soon morph into service for his pleasure, and suddenly, Magnus isn’t sure if it's the fragility of the moment, or of his heart that he’s most afraid of. -

“I—uh,”That’s when he saw Alec Lightwood walking towards him. Relief washed over—spoke too soon—he thought, because Alec Lightwood stopped beside him and possessively slipped an arm around his waist, pulling him flush against his side.
“Are you enjoying yourself? Miss—“
His tone was so smug.
“Yes, t—thank you. I’ll make myself scarce.” She stammered.

"I want to go away, Alec," Magnus had whispered to him one night; they were sat in the balcony of their loft, both staring at the midnight sky as Chairman Meow slept peacefully on Alec’s lap. Even then, he'd known how tired and weary Magnus was; the reforms and Alicante’s high society had finally taken a toll on him, even if Magnus refused to show signs of slowing down, the effects were showing in the fine lines and dark circles that had appeared on his usually flawless skin. Sighing, Magnus had stretched and leaned against him, resting his head against Alec’s shoulder as they gazed up at the stars.
"Do you want to run away? You and I. We could just leave." Alec had said on a whim.
Magnus had smiled wide and kissed him deeply, waking Chairman Meow up, who yowled loudly before slinking off into their drawing-room.
"I just . . . want to get away. Just once." Magnus had finally said. “We haven’t been anywhere in two years.”
"Anywhere you want to go, I'll gladly go with you," Alec had murmured.

Magnus Bane podría o no estar comprometido con Alec Lightwood y definitivamente sigue teniendo problemas para encontrarle el obsequio de cumpleaños perfecto así ya hayan pasado tres obsequios desde el primero.
Situado después de Academia de Cazadores de Sombras, "Burn to endless night", antes de "Una larga conversación" y, por ende, antes de "Lady Midnight", Magnus ya sabe que no debe llamar a Catarina para pedir ayuda ni menos invocar demonios babosos en medio loft, pero sigue estando atrapado en la misma complicación: ¿qué regalarle a un Cazador de Sombras que lo ha conseguido todo?
(Tiene relación con el relato de Cassandra Clare, así que podría considerarse una segunda parte)
