    "Thrown out already?" Geralt asks, and sees the bard shaking his head from the corner of his eye.

    "Hardly! But a wise bard knows when to leave the audience wanting more."

    "I've never met one."

    "One what?"

    "A wise bard," he says, and glances over to see the bard's mouth flapping indignantly.

    "I -- am going to let that go, because you're right, where are my manners." He ducks in front of Geralt as they step onto solid ground, forcing him to halt, and gives him a bow, no less graceful for being quickly executed. "Jaskier, troubadour, poet -- and barker -- at your service."

    Geralt assumes the bard will wander away of his own accord. Eventually.

    It takes a while to realize that's the last thing he wants.

    “And I thought witchers were quiet.” The man interjected, lifting a brow as he looked over at Jaskier. The witcher blinked once or twice, before he registered the slight curl to the man’s lips - and that was a near smile. 

    Jaskier snorted, but tipped his head in acknowledgement.

    Also not ACTUALLY major character death. It's temporary and everyone survives, just wanted you all to be prepared for that scene when it came. Everyone is okay at the end, I promise!

    (Meanwhile, Juniper—or Jaskier, as he was once known—is kicking himself for making the exact same mistake that Geralt made all those years ago. But maybe a child surprise is exactly what he needs to help him move on from his lost humanity. And the girl seems to be dealing with her own brand of grief. Perhaps he can help her.)

    When Witchers were created, so to were The Companions. A person who journeys with a Witcher to keep them sane, to heal them, to offer comfort, to reassure villages that the Witcher is not a monster, will not go on a rampage, or slake their needs at the local bawdy house. A Witcher cannot travel without a Companion, and Companions are granted agelessness to follow their Witchers.

    After Blaviken, Geralt is without a Companion, them having fled after the massacre. And perhaps it was the second...fifth one to flee Geralt. It wasn't his fault they were morons.

    Jaskier has been fired by one...three Witchers for being too mouthy, frustrating, a list of things that he thinks is quite unfair.

    Vesemir makes it clear they are each other's last chance. Work well together, or Jaskier will begin to age again, and Geralt will never leave the walls of Kaer Morhen.

    Jaskier and Geralt are deeply unimpressed with each other but agree to play along. They didn't expect to fall madly in love. Soulmates are just fairy tales, after all. Not for the likes of them.

    The young God hesitated, brows drawn together. She waited patiently. 

    “I don’t know.” He said, softly, and she brightened. 

    “You will.” Mother said, with a laugh that was deep and wide as the sky above. She let go of his hands to cup his cheeks, tugging him down to press a kiss to his forehead. 

    “You will, my darling one.”

    When Lambert runs into Jaskier in a small town in Redania, it's the safest he's felt in years. He and his brothers need touch and kindness more than they're willing to admit, and all Jaskier wants it to help , if only the witchers would let him.

    Geralt and Jaskier are together, all the other relationships are platonic with a good helping of touch-starvation on the side.

    Geralt barely managed to slam the pommel of his sword up in a glancing blow that shattered the metal latch holding the Soldier’s mask in place. The Soldier rolled into the movement with a dancer’s grace and came to his full height just as easily. For a moment, his hands reached up to run over the exposed skin, before he slowly turned to face Geralt once more.

    The Witcher froze in a mixture of horror and near-frantic hope.

    He stared into the eyes of a dead man and whispered, “Jaskier?”

    Julian’s mother stood up. She claimed she was prepared to stop the fae, to protect her baby, but in Julian’s darkest moments he doubted this part of the story. His mother loved him, of that he had no doubt, but she had been young and weary, and even years later, she couldn’t quite get the twinge of exhaustion out of her eyes when she recalled Julian’s infancy. Even if she had been keen on protecting him, the fae was too close, too fast, too set on his plan.

    “A gift, for the new mother,” the fae continued. He leaned a hand in to stroke Julian’s cheek. “I give you the gift of obedience.”

    As a baby, Jaskier was visited by a fae, who gifted Jaskier's mother with Jaskier's obedience. As Jaskier grew older, the "gift" became more of a curse.
