He heard Hua Cheng moving along the hall bathed in silence, footsteps echoing in the air, his presence impossible to ignore even when he was doing absolutely nothing, E'Ming was docked at his side, shorter than his original form, his eye closed, his essence pulsing softly even as he slept.
Mu Qing barely looked up to watch him arrange for the umpteenth time the display cases of ancient swords he had collected for Xie Lian over the centuries. Hua Cheng also took very seriously the task of taking care of the armory on behalf of his husband.
If there was one thing he had always found fascinating about his strange and unlikely and distorted romantic relationship with Hua Cheng, it was the peace he could enjoy in being in the same room with him, together, but without having to feel the need to have to fill the silence between them. It was not a nervous silence or one of discomfort, but a comfortable silence.
Usually, at least.

Xie Lian jolted awake, panting heavily, his hands clenched around his throat and his eyes wide with fear. Someone was bent over him, feeling hot hands clasping on his, as if trying to pull his fingers away from his throat.
"... Lian'er? Are you awake?"
The prince shifted his gaze from the ceiling (no, he was not dangling from a beam) to his fiancé with extreme difficulty.
Feng Xin's golden eyes planted themselves in his, as always. Xie Lian gasped again, unable to look away, and repressed with even greater effort the words choked in his throat, a question to which he really did not want an answer (Did you really come back to me in the end?) because, on closer inspection, this was not the same Feng Xin of his memories.Series
