Despite himself, despite the fear, Tom laughs a little. "Oh, yeah? Why's that?"
"Well, first off, we were competition. And yeah, you were attractive, but then you opened your mouth and I swear. You were just an asshole. Goose is trying to introduce you to me and here I am thinking about how much of an asshole you are. Shut up about Cougar, asshole."
"It was supposed to be a friendly competition!"
"Yeah, right. So that's what I was thinking: he's attractive, clearly doesn't know how to talk to other men, might be into the proposition if I framed it the right way. But he's an asshole, so this competition is just gonna be friendly." Pete pauses. Then he says, "Ice, you wanna get married?"
And that's how they start talking about it.

oh this hit hard. what a mean piece of art. the internal monologues, the most insane slow burn, the deeply rooted yknow.... if i wanna cry from these specific things again ill just reread this. the prose is like s-tier writing, captures the emotions so precisely and satisfyingly. so beautiful

my favorite characterization of them, really brilliant chemistry, this is why i will always vouch for slow burns omg. i fucking love biker deku. i fucking love lowkey loser katsuki. i fucking love izuku folding paper planes and drowning katsuki's office in them when katsuki's a clean freak. i was hooked from the beginning--haven't enjoyed the humor in a fic this much in a while!
