“There was an attack on Kamar Taj last night,” Wong says casually and then his voice goes from tinny over phone speakers to clear as he sighs and the orange sparks of a portal fizzle out.
“Why didn’t you call me?” he demands, now standing in the rebuilt sanctuary as his heart thuds against his chest loud enough, surely, that Wong could hear it. “What happened? Were they after-”
Wong raises a hand and Stephen pauses long enough to breathe, to hear his friend out. “We had it handled in a matter of minutes. Had there been a real threat, you would’ve been the first call I made, you know this.”
Tension drains lightly from Stephen’s frame, but there is a vice around his lungs that clings and lingers. “Well,” he says, straightening his clothes slightly, “why wouldn’t you just say that?”

Summary
Steve Harrington decides to stay at Jonathan's house for some time, courtesy to his own getting renovated, it isn't a problem or a big deal.
Until along the late night conversation, shared laughs, funny polaroids and a homemade cake, Steve starts to realise he might be noticing Jonathan Byers more than he should.
And, of course, Jonathan is doing absolutely nothing to make it better.

a few weeks captured through Steve's eyes which start to seek Jonathan out, unintentionally, during his stay with him.

The monthly meetups they all promised to do eventually become more irregular when Nancy and Robin become busier, and in the middle of it all Steve and Jonathan find company in each other.

It was the early summer of 88’ - The ruins of Hawkins were finally fixed-up, both Robin and Nancy were leaving for college and Steve didn’t see any reason to spend another single second in this shithole. With the help of his parent’s money(and some that he earned himself, thank you very much), he finds a nice little apartment in Upper Queens.
The only one out of their newly formed friend group that seemed to be staying was Jonathan.
That was until he drunkenly admitted to Steve that he did not in fact get rejected from NYU, but waitlisted, and listening to him rant in complete misery about his unclear future ushered Steve do the stupidest thing in his life so far.
Fuck, he was really gonna do this.
“You could stay at my place.”
Or; Steve asks Jonathan to move in with him in New York in 88’ instead of 89’, and together they navigate overcoming their differences and their past by living together inte city of dreams.

Summary
Jon’s apartment smelt like overly rich coffee, maybe slightly overbrewed and tart, and a little bit like malignant mildew. Two things that shouldn’t have woven together to make Steve feel like he was at home, but he knew he would find himself missing the smell as soon as he got onto the plane home. It hopefully would linger in his nose as Jon clapped him on the back and sent him away at the end of his trip, and he would look at his face, the one he’d thrown his fist into with all the force he could handle when they were kids, and think about how much he would miss him. His apartment. The smell of his apartment.
The smell of him.
