Summary
One spring morning at the farmer's market, an insect lands on the brim of Trevor Larson's hat. A stranger with a camera approaches, wanting to get the shot, and Trevor's life is never the same. A touching story of love, loss, and self-discovery.
“Don’t move.” The unfamiliar voice, melodic and sweet, sent a jolt of awareness through me. Don’t move or what? I’d fall into a sinkhole? Step on a dog? Knock over a toddler? Was I getting robbed?
Opening my eyes, I saw a Polaroid camera hovering inches from my face. Peeking out from behind the camera was a broad smile with blinding white teeth.
“That’s a pipevine swallowtail on your hat,” the stranger said, his grin somehow managing to grow. My eyes flicked up to see the tip of a vibrant teal insect wing fluttering slowly on the brim. “Can I take a picture?”
My brow twitched. Why would this random guy want a picture of me?
“Of the butterfly I mean,” he stammered. Color stained the freckled brown skin of his cheeks. He smiled nervously up at me and added, “They’re super rare this far north in April.”
