Five Things an OTW Volunteer Said

Every month or so the OTW will be doing a Q&A with one of its volunteers about their experiences in the organization. The posts express each volunteer's personal views and do not necessarily reflect the views of the OTW or constitute OTW policy. Today's post is with Tanya D. Zuk, who volunteers for Transformative Works & Cultures.

How does what you do as a volunteer fit into what the OTW does?

As an Assistant Editor for Transformative Works & Cultures (TWC), I help to review incoming scholarship on fans and transformative works by connecting articles with peer reviewers, synthesizing feedback, and maintaining journal standards. But mostly I help to keep track of where articles are in the process of being published. The cool thing about this position is that I can read new scholarship and help elevate marginalized voices in both fandom and academia.

What is a typical week like for you as a volunteer?

Lots and lots of emails. But in all seriousness, it is a lot of reviewing emails and updating the back end of the journal as each article transitions from stage to stage. There really isn’t a typical week as articles are in a variety of stages as reviewers come in and feedback goes out throughout the year. I will say that I’m always learning new things about the position and what it entails.

What made you decide to volunteer?

I’m a huge believer in open-source /open-access in academia and in education more generally. The opportunity to support an organization like OTW that makes things like TWC possible was something I couldn’t pass up. I’m a fan and an academic and TWC is the first journal that focused on fan studies that isn’t behind a paywall. So much of academia and what I do with research is behind paywalls, which can severely limit research, especially for precarious or independent scholars.

What has been your biggest challenge doing work for the OTW?

Networking. A lot of what we do is matching articles to the best peer reviewers for that piece, which requires a lot of networking and recruiting. Networking is still a skill that I’m developing. I think a lot of people struggle with creating networks and I look forward to building up my network of people invested in TWC & OTW.

What fannish things do you like to do?

I’m a hallway cosplayer, I tend to do mash-ups and cosplay of fanart. I’ve done a Steampunk TARDIS (life sized), Leia/Bowie “Rebel, Rebel” mash-up, Hooded Figure walking a corgi from Welcome to Night Vale (fan art), and a gender-swapped Professor X (with a femme Magneto partner). In addition to cosplay at various cons over the years, I am an avid collector of fan art and display my collection throughout home and office.

Now that our volunteer’s said five things about what they do, it’s your turn to ask one more thing! Feel free to ask about their work in the comments. Or if you'd like, you can check out earlier Five Things posts.

Fanlore Discord Moderator Volunteer

Are you interested in community management? Do you enjoy chatting with fans about fannish history and fandom in general? Do you like helping people answer questions about wiki editing? The Fanlore team needs Discord moderators to help Fanlore editors connect with each other, answer questions, and run our quarterly editing chats.

The Fanlore editing community on our Discord server documents fandom history, engages in challenges and editing chats, and works on editing Fanlore together. We need your help to keep the server a lively and welcoming place. If you think you might enjoy that, come and join us!

Applications will close on 28 February 2024 or after 30 applications are received.

Fanlore Outreach Analyst Volunteer

Would you like to help Fanlore reach more fans and reach new editors? Do you have a background in digital marketing or social media strategy? If so, we need your help! The Fanlore team needs analysts to research Fanlore's social media environment and fan internet activity surrounding Fanlore editing. Analysts will draft reports and strategies to help us reach more fans and potential editors. We have a lot of amazing fan history and fandom content, and a team creating promotional posts and graphics for social media, but we need your help to develop our social media strategy.

If you think you might enjoy that, come and join us!

As part of our application process, candidates who pass the initial review will also be asked to create a sample social media post for Fanlore consisting of a 280-character tweet and a 100-word Tumblr post promoting a Fanlore article. Further directions will be given upon applying.

Applications will close on 28 February 2024 or after 30 applications are received.

Fanlore Social Media & Outreach Volunteer

Do you have an interest in fandom history, or in fannish culture and the different tropes, ships, communities and viewpoints that make up fandom? Are you interested in social media, community management or outreach? The Fanlore committee is recruiting for Social Media & Outreach volunteers!

Fanlore Social Media & Outreach volunteers are responsible for writing and editing Fanlore's promotional posts on social media, planning and running Fanlore's editing challenges, maintaining Fanlore's social media channels, and thinking of ways to reach out to and engage with new corners of fandom.

No extensive experience required—only reliability, teamwork, good communication skills, and an interest in fandom and Fanlore in particular. Join us!

As part of our application process, candidates who pass the initial review will also be asked to create a sample social media post for Fanlore consisting of a 280-character tweet and a 100-word Tumblr post promoting a Fanlore article. Further directions will be given upon applying.

Applications will close on 28 February 2024 or after 40 applications are received.

Fanlore Social Media Moderator Volunteer

Are you an experienced user of a social media platform such as Tumblr, Bluesky, or Twitter/X? Do you enjoy interacting with fans about fannish history and fandom in general? The Fanlore team needs social media moderators to manage Fanlore's presence on social media platforms, reblogging a range of posts of relevance and interest to Fanlore editors, interacting with users on the site, and passing questions along to the rest of the Fanlore team.

If you think you might enjoy that, come and join us!

As part of our application process, candidates who pass the initial review will also be asked to select two social media posts on the relevant social media platform for reblogging/retweeting/reposting onto Fanlore social media and write 2-3 sentences explaining the decision. Further directions will be given upon applying.

Applications will close on 28 February 2024 or after 30 applications are received.

Translation Volunteer

If you enjoy working collaboratively, if you're fluent in a language other than English, if you’re passionate about the OTW and its projects, and want to help us reach more fans all around the world, working with Translation might be for you!

Translation volunteers help make the OTW and its projects accessible to a wider global audience. We work on translating content by the OTW and its projects from English to other languages, such as site pages, news posts, AO3 FAQs and AO3 Support emails. (However, we do not translate fanworks.)

We really need volunteers who speak Afrikaans, Arabic, Basque, Bengali, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Filipino, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Macedonian, Marathi, Persian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovenian, Thai, Turkish and Welsh—but help with other languages would be much appreciated. If you're interested in starting a team for a language we don't have yet, you're very welcome to!

(Please note that our Catalan, Chinese, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese teams are not accepting new members at this time. If you are fluent in one of these languages and interested in volunteering, please consider volunteering for another team within the organization instead.)

Applicants will be asked to translate and correct short text samples and will be invited to a chatroom interview as part of the selection process. More information about us can be found on the Translation committee page.

Applications will close on 28 February 2024.

Apply at the volunteering page!

If you have further questions, please contact us.

International Fanworks Day is a celebration of so many things we love about fandom. Whether you contributed on AO3, Fanlore, social media, or Discord, we're delighted that you've joined in for the 10th year of this special day.

Be sure to check out everyone's contributions in the International Fanworks Day 2024 tag on AO3 and using the tag #IFD2024 on social media. We have also had over 120 contributions to Feedback Fest on AO3 and at the OTW website, so stop by and add your own. Our OTW Tumblr mod has also been keeping up with many rec lists posted there.

So far over 55,000 people have taken the IFD 10th year survey. The survey will remain open until February 19th if you haven't yet taken part.

For 30 hours between February 14 and 16, many of you joined OTW volunteers for our annual chatroom games marathon on Discord. As usual, all of the filk participating fans created as part of our Lyrics Round Robin games is now available on the IFD AO3 account.

Finally, there's still a chance to get in on the fun over at Fanlore, whose IFD 2024 Fanlore Challenge will continue to run until February 18th.

We hope to see many of you back next year to celebrate our activities in fandom once again. And aside from activities run by the OTW, some of the other fandom group events are still going on. If you know of any others, link them here in the comments!

Game Guidelines

5 Things (5 scheduled)

How to Play: During this game, the host will name a topic and players in the room will call out examples from their favorite fandoms. This will repeat for at least 5 rounds. Be prepared to explain why your answer counts (maybe you’ll recruit someone new to your fandom!)

Countdown (3 scheduled)

How to Play: The host has a list of 7 clues. After they type each clue into the chat room, people can guess what the answer is. If no one guesses correctly, the host offers the next clue. The game will continue until someone has guessed the person, place or thing BUT the sooner someone guesses the answer, the more points they will get! After 3 rounds the person with the most points wins.

Linkee (2 scheduled)

How to Play: The host will read a clue and each player should guess (to themselves — shhh!) what the answer is that fits into the [BLANK]. The host will then read 2 more clues. After each one, players can call out a guess about what they think links the clues together. The first person to guess correctly gets a point. When we have completed all clue sets, the person with the most points wins.

List Builder (5 scheduled)

How to Play: List Builder is a collaborative game in which players work together to come up with a list of fandom characters or items belonging to a particular genre, starting with consecutive letters of the alphabet. Start at A and work your way through to Z (you can be as flexible as required on the difficult letters!)

Lyrics Round Robin (3 scheduled)

How to Play: During this game, we’ll collectively write FANDOM lyrics to replace those of a familiar song. The host will choose the song and type out an alternate first two lines. Then those in the room will write the next lines until the song is finished.

That’s Life (4 scheduled)

How to Play: This is an RP game. Participants will first name a character that they know well for each round. Every round will consist of two random questions posted by the moderator. Participants share how the character they chose for that round would answer the questions as if answering from their point of view. For each round, participants will name a different character to answer the new questions.

Trivia (1 scheduled)

How to Play: Like most trivia games, the host will ask a question and the first person to answer correctly wins that round. Because we’re online and you’re free to do searches we’re going to add another factor, which is time — you must answer within 2 minutes. But you can call out your answer as soon as you think you know. If you're the first to have the correct answer, the host will type your name and award you a point. At the end of the game, whoever has gotten the most points will be named the winner!

Two Truths, One Lie (4 scheduled)

How to Play: The host will paste into the chat 3 statements. Because we’re online and you’re free to do searches we’re going to add another factor, which is time — you must answer within 30 seconds after the third statement!

We also want to hear from you about other celebrations taking place today. Leave us a comment here to tell us about what your fandom communities are doing!

A word bubble made up of feedback phrases in many different languages that surround the title Feedback Fest

Welcome to the International Fanworks Day Feedback Fest. Because it's the 10th year of observance, we're making that part of this activity!

Here’s how it works:

Leave a comment here recommending 10 fanworks, and say something about why you love these works and think others should check them out. You can also link to a recommendation post you’ve made elsewhere which is tagged with #FeedbackFest. Remember that fan communities, newsletters, archives, and other resources are fanworks too, so there are a lot of possibilities!

For everyone checking out the rec'ed fanworks, don’t forget to leave comments, likes, kudos, or other feedback to those fan creators to help spread the love. Let the fannish celebration begin!

As part of celebrating International Fanworks Day for the 10th year, we are curious to know how many of you are out there looking for fanworks and creating fanworks of various kinds. We got a great response to the survey we ran for our 16th Anniversary last September and are hoping many of you will want to participate.

This survey asks 12 ticky box or multiple choice questions and does not ask for any identifying information. All users will be anonymous. We ask that only those 18 or over take the survey.

TAKE THE SURVEY

In honor of IFD's 10th year, the survey will be open for 10 days (closing on February 19 at 23:59 UTC). We will be sharing the results of the survey in a public report in March.

2014-2024 International Fanworks Day

This February 15th will mark the 10th annual International Fanworks Day! In honour of IFD, the OTW will be hosting several events. Which ones will you take part in?

1. 10 Things About Fandom A couple of weeks ago, we sent out a call for essay contributions telling us about ten things that mean the most to you about fandom, or a highlight about the past ten years you've spent in fandom, or about ten funny, exciting or noteworthy moments that happened in your fandoms. If you haven't written a post yet you can still share your experiences on social media with the tag #IFD2024!

2. 10th Annual Survey: As part of celebrating International Fanworks Day for the 10th year, we are curious to know how many of you are out there looking for fanworks and creating fanworks of various kinds. We got a great response to the survey we ran for the OTW's 16th Anniversary last September and are hoping many of you will want to participate in this new survey, which launches February 9th.

3. IFDrabble: This is a fanworks fest that invites you to create short fanworks, whether drabbles, drawbles, vidlets or other fanworks fitting an annual theme. This year that is 10! So somehow incorporate the number 10 into your work and either use the AO3 tag "International Fanworks Day 2024" when posting your works, or on social media you can use #IFDrabble for a chance for us to signal boost your work.

4. Fanlore Challenge: Fanlore is participating in IFD, too! Every day from February 12-18, Fanlore will post different challenges on their Tumblr, their Twitter, and on Fanlore for all editors to participate in. How well do you know your fandom? It’s time to show off your knowledge and contribute to Fanlore!

5. Feedback Fest: Feedback Fest is a chance to show your favourite fanworks some love, and to get some great recommendations from others! Look for our Feedback Fest post on February 13th, then leave a comment with 10 fanwork recommendations! On social media, use the tag #FeedbackFest when posting.

6. Games and Fan Chat: On February 15th, we’ll be hosting a chat in the OTW’s Discord. Join us between 21:00 UTC February 14th (What time is that where I live?) and 03:00 UTC February 16th (What time is that where I live?) to play trivia games and chat with other fans! The chat room will be moderated in English, and we’ll post a detailed schedule on the 15th.

I. IFD 2024

International Fanworks Day (IFD) is just around the corner! The Communications team has been hard at work preparing for this special occasion, and the Translation team is kicking off the new year by ensuring that we have content ready in 25 different languages for International Fanworks Day. Additionally, the Fanlore team is preparing for their annual International Fanworks Day Fanlore Challenge, which will take place the week of the event.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of IFD and we'll share our celebration plans in a few days!

II. AT THE AO3

Accessibility, Design and Technology spent most of December testing and tweaking code for a jumbo-sized release (over 20 issues!) that was deployed on January 6. This was followed by several releases consisting of only a few issues each.

Open Doors completed imports of LeBeau Library (of the Gambit Guild forum, an X-Men fanfiction archive focusing on the character Remy LeBeau or “Gambit”), Library of Moria (a Tolkien slash, femslash, gen, and RPF fanfiction and fanart archive), and Offpanel.net (a DC Comics and other fandom archive). They have also announced the import of The Common People Warehouse (an archive focusing on the ordinary people of the Marvel universe, inspired by The Common People (TCP) genre of Marvel Comics fanfiction) and Elysejský klíč (a Harry Potter fanfiction and fanart archive).

Tag Wrangling continued to make progress in testing the new procedures for wrangling tags not associated with specific fandoms, and began implementing some of the decisions made in early rounds of testing. In December, more than 390,000 tags were wrangled across more than 62,800 fandoms - more than 900 tags per wrangler.

Elsewhere, Policy and Abuse received approximately 23.6K tickets in 2023 (1,700 in December), and Support received 2,981 tickets in December, bringing their yearly total for 2023 to 24,814 tickets, an increase of nearly 36% over the previous year.

Pie chart of the nearly 23,600 Policy & Abuse tickets submitted in 2023, divided by type of complaint. Non-fanworks: 47%; Rejected complaints about offensive content: 18%; Plagiarism and Copyright infringement: 9%; Harassment: 8%; Commercial promotion: 7%; Policy questions: 3%; Other: 3%; Incorrect fandom tags: 3%; Insufficient ratings or warnings: 2%. These categories reflect the subject of the complaint, and (with the exception of Offensive Content), do not indicate whether the report was upheld or rejected.

III. ELSEWHERE AT THE OTW

To close out 2023, Fanlore ran a fun editing chat focused on minor characters and rarepairs, and Systems kept an eye on the servers as they happily whirred along through December, serving everyone their wonderful AO3 works and Fanlore pages.

In December and January, Legal addressed quite a few user queries, dealt with an app that was violating the Archive Terms of Service by charging money for access to works on the Archive, and worked to address other situations where users were confused about sites that seemed to be connected OTW or AO3, but weren’t. One of their major projects in December and January involved handling some mistaken copyright takedown notices that had been sent to Microsoft that were blocking search access to some material on AO3.

Excitingly, Transformative Works and Cultures has been awarded a prize from the University of Amsterdam for their Diamond Open Access Journal! Additionally, they will soon be announcing the winner of the TWC Fans of Color Research Prize which will recognize the best peer-reviewed article about fans and/or fandoms of color published in TWC in the preceding 3 years. The next issue of Transformative Works and Cultures, a special issue focused on “Fandoms and Platforms” will be published on March 15, 2024.

IV. GOVERNANCE

Board spent time preparing for its public meeting, which took place on January 28. Be on the lookout for the minutes which will be released soon. Meanwhile, Finance is working on finishing up 2023 bookkeeping to prepare for year end accounting adjustments and reconciliations.

Development and Membership had a blast at Arisia! Check out photos on Tumblr or Twitter, and add your #OTWThreeTropeDraw prompts if you drew one – or try at home if you have one of our spiffy card decks! The OTW will be at two events coming up: Ret-Con Outside Raleigh and Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle.
