Summary
The smattering of guests were mostly on the snooty professor spectrum, and He Xuan had nothing in common with any of them. His books would never grace the halls of academia, and that’s not what he wanted, anyway. But Xie Lian fit in with them well, smart enough to hold conversation, yet interesting enough to bring those discussions from the cliffedge of suicidal dullness. He got why Hua Cheng was infatuated with him, in the abstract way he could understand why some people found celebrities attractive or when mathematicians described beauty in numerical patterns.
But he did not want to understand this, because somehow, it made the loss worse. Hua Cheng had never expressed a shade of interest in him, but if he had fallen for someone at least similar to He Xuan, he could have something tangible to torture himself over. As it stood, he was nothing but a shadow standing in Xie Lian’s glowing halo, and Hua Cheng had never even considered him.

Summary
“Who was here?” he asked, casualty in how he carried himself through the kitchen.
“Hua Cheng. Wants me to pet sit this weekend.”
“Oh, stupendous.” Mu Qing took a glass and some ice, filling it up with water from the tap. His long legs were bare up to the shorts he’d thrown on, and a black, raggedy band tea was knotted against his stomach. “You’re gonna have a lot of fun hanging out with Unfriendly 1 and Unfriendly 2, aren’t you?”
“E’Ming likes me.”
“Uh huh.” Mu Qing came closer, and He Xuan stood up before he could be pulled back into that spider webbing. He wasn’t in the mood for anymore games or taunts. “Where are you going?”
“Back to bed,” he said. “Get dressed, get your stuff, and get out of my hair.” In the bedroom, he collapsed face-first on the bed and shut his eyes. He Xuan worked to block out Mu Qing shuffling around to get changed and leave. He’d be happier when his apartment was sullen and silent again, when he could mope in peace.

Summary
“No,” He Xuan lied. “Isn’t it usually weird seeing all your stuff packed up like this, though? Didn’t you ever…”
Mu Qing rolled a hand at him, urging He Xuan to complete a thought.
“...move?”
“You mean, have I ever left a place to go live somewhere else? Uh, duh.” He rolled his eyes, then sauntered closer. “Shockingly, A-Xuan, I don’t spend a lot of time caring about the place I’m in. An apartment is just like any other. Well-“ he paused that statement to swing his gaze around. “-my place is nicer than yours, but that’s pretty obvious. Are you ready to call the movers up to get the last of this?”
He nodded. Either Mu Qing was being purposefully obtuse about this, or he genuinely didn’t care about where he lived. Honestly, He Xuan could see the point. He wouldn’t be nostalgic for this apartment because the faucets were shiny or the shower’s water pressure was nice. But there were memories, and that was something harder to handwave away, unless he was a frigid bitch.
Mu Qing was, but He Xuan was long past holding that against him.

Summary
Mu Qing could be an ice queen, but he did break first this time. “I think we should go to Hua Cheng’s birthday party.”
Looking up, He Xuan scowled. “Why?” he asked.
“Show him how good you’re doing without him?” Mu Qing shrugged. He crossed his legs and returned He Xuan’s scowl with a smile full of spite. “He was so sure we would crash and burn, babe. Thought I would leave you crying on the sidewalk, but...months later, here we are, still working somehow. Don’t you think it’d be nice to throw it back in his face?”
He Xuan tasted bile. “No.” He smoothed a hand across the top of his laptop, chasing away a bit of pollen that drifted through the air and stopped to cling. It went spiraling out, returning toward the park which had probably spit it out in the first place. “Besides, you’re nothing to brag about.”
Mu Qing rolled his eyes. “Thanks, you’re a real catch, too,” he muttered, flatly.
