Summary
People learned to live with the change. Humans were adaptable, they conformed to a new set of rules, a fresh way of interacting with their world. Their shutters were always locked tight, doors shut, and lanterns burning long into the night to keep out what was constantly trying to push in. Night fell over the Wei kingdom, and no one walked outside the safety of the light. Darkness, they learned, had grown teeth.
The Ganquaun Palace, like the rest of the imperial city, was quiet. Even the wind did not dare to move through the hanging lanterns along the front. They had been allowed to darken. It was safer. The darkness was safer. Light called to them.
Guards walked the perimeter of the palace, their eyes watching the shadowy roads of the palace. It took almost no time for them to adjust, to know the difference between a harmful shadow and one they could not fight. As the sun finally disappeared, and the world grew dark and cool, the pale faces of the dead began to emerge from the shadows.

He turned his head, violet eyes piercing Valor with their cold practicality.
"Faith does not secure kingdoms, Captain. Go gather the guard and secure the manor. Once the air has circulated, I want all the windows shut again."
"Yes, your highness," Valor said. He bowed. The heart that belonged squarely in his chest had migrated up through his throat where it beat in flutters.

She leaned out to aim a shot that knocked one of their attackers’ guns out of his hand. Wolfwood felt breathless as she watched how effortless that shot had been for the blonde beside her.
“Do you? Uh, bat?” she asked, as she felt the attraction to Vash begin to warm her belly even more from the sight of Vash’s exquisite gun skills. “Do you bat for the same team as me?”
As she shouldered her Punisher, she blasted in the direction of the attackers with a frown of concentration.
“Do you have to ask?” Vash replied. “I know you already had me figured out.”

“When are you gonna fuck me, anyway?” Wolfwood says into the quiet of the room.
He knows it's a mistake as soon as the words are out of his mouth. He's lying on the couch, head on Vash's lap as he absently pets through his hair while reading a book. It had felt, well, a little too much, but Vash had coaxed him into the position. It was nice enough at first, but the cogs in Wolfwood's head won't stop turning. He can feel Vash's legs stiffen under him, the hand in his hair briefly pausing before resuming its gentle petting.
“I can,” Vash says, and it's his goofy one, not the serious voice that makes the hair on the back of Wolfwood's neck stand up, “You're pretty demanding though, for a sub. What brought this on?”
