Summary
He is so lost in his own torment, that he doesn’t hear the footsteps until they are upon him, he doesn’t register the other presence in the tower until a soft whisper breathes his name.
“Malfoy, what are you doing up here?”
Draco startles, dropping the vial, and nearly loses his balance on the tower edge.
Before he can put himself to rights, the vial shatters on impact with the stone floor. The contents smoke and hiss as they spread across the surface, and Draco can’t bring himself to even look at the source of the interruption. He doesn’t need to though, there is no mistaking the identity of the owner of that voice. Just as there is no mistaking that his plans for the night have suddenly been derailed.

Summary
Naturally, Draco would later say that it was all Potter’s fault.
It was always Potter’s fault.
Draco just usually ended up dragged along for the ride. Mostly unwillingly.
Well, sometimes unwillingly.
Oh, who was he kidding— Draco usually got them into trouble in the first place by purposefully riling Potter up. He’d even admit it. Just not to Potter himself.
This is why, when they found a golden key and an ancient, gnarled journal sitting on top of an innocuous map, they should have left well enough alone. Or at least cast protective charms.
Because this time, it was definitely Potter’s fault
