In the crisp air, Taichi struggles to tell whether it’s the sun or the wind that turns Suo’s cheeks pink. There’s something utterly childlike about him—a side of Suo that Taichi sees in flashes alone. His threadbare jacket feels like a form of youthful rebellion. He’s bony in his long pants and boots, a stocking cap pulled snugly over his hair. It reminds Taichi of the one he’d wear as a kid. He always let Arata borrow it.
Would I have done the same for Suo if I knew him then? he thinks. If we were in the same year in school, if we’d met sooner.

Summary
Taichi was getting irritated, the longer they sat across from each other, and he listened to Suo slurp his lukewarm tea, and it was Valentine’s Day. He made his way back to the counter—ordered Suo another hojicha tea, sweetened with milk, extra sweet, please. He could’ve returned to their table in the meantime, but he found himself starring at the tea bag as it steeped.
Maybe it was guilt—that he was in such a piss poor mood for the holiday, that he was taking it out on Suo as though he hadn’t invited Suo out. Maybe he didn’t want to be here. Maybe he did, and that was somehow worse.

Summary
He leaned against his kitchen counter, watching as Suo steeped his tea. For all that Taichi thought he’d banished any remnants of Suo in the past year, he’d missed so many little things. The spoon and jar of sugar—in the same place, judging by how Suo found them without issue. The brand of milk Suo liked, which Taichi had continued to buy. Without Suo around, he’d taken up deep cleaning as a way to make his apartment feel like new, to feel like only his again. He’d obviously done a mediocre job, which was why he still found traces of Suo between couch cushions, in junk drawers, in squeaky floorboards, in empty cupboards, in his tea kettle.
It made sense for Suo to be back when he’d never really left.

Taichi didn’t lift his chin to look at him, but Suo did hear his eyes flicker open. His eyelashes were long enough that you could always hear when they moved—that was one of the things Suo found most interesting about him.
“How?”
“My cousin does hair. I probably can, too.”

It crossed his mind how easy this could be. If Suo was more impulsive, if Taichi was more sure of himself. They could get engaged tonight, too. Taichi could call Chihaya early enough that she’d still be awake to hear the news. In a perfect world, they could all be mirrored images of each other—but they couldn’t be, not really, Taichi knew this. Not when Chihaya and Arata reflected each other’s light, like the sun and the sea, and he and Suo were more like two moons, orbiting each other with no end in sight.

"You shouldn't have bothered inviting me," Taichi says, squatting down and arranging the firewood until it looks right.
He hopes no one hears, he hopes that Suo will hear—and maybe ask him if he's okay, so he can respond I'm fine, I'm fine a few times, until he's sure Suo cares to know the real answer. Arata probably hears him, too, but he's a natural at being the bigger person. He bends down and drives the last point of their tent into the earth. Taichi winces every time his hammer connects with the stake.

Summary
Sharp hearing makes it difficult to succumb to cat naps. Suo knows this, and so he's rarely surprised when little noises wake him up. Usually he stirs lazily, to the sound of the garbage disposal, or Taichi's footsteps on hardwood, or a cat's meows.
He awakens with a jolt on the couch.
