Summary
Angela Shepard may only be seven, but she wasn’t stupid. She knew that she and Curly, Kelsey, Jessica M, and a few others were different compared to the other kids in their class. She could see it in the way Curly and Ponyboy ran around in jeans with holes worn through, but Jordan Tibeau ripped his at recess once and came to school with brand new jeans the next day. Or the way Arabella Stevens had a new dress every other week, but Cathy still wore the same dress she had when she was four- except now it was more like a shirt since Cathy’d grown so much since then.
Some days the difference was easier to ignore than others.
Today was not one of those days.

Summary
“You ain’t gonna hurt him over this,” she props her hand on her hips, fierce as she’s always been, eyes as cold as his own, “I won’t let you.”
“Jesus Angel, whaddya take me for?” Now he’s real angry. After all these years of him pulling Curly out of scrape after mistake, spending time in the cooler just so Curly wouldn’t have to, she thinks this would be the straw that breaks the camel's back? Maybe she’s colder than he even realized if she could believe such a thing. “I’m trying to stop him gettin’ hurt- or worse. But you can’t talk like that, not even ‘round here.”

Summary
Four year old Angela thought Sylvia had the prettiest voice she’d ever heard, soft and slightly husky, even when she was mad. She spoke Spanish like them, but different too, smoother and more languid and Angela wanted to listen to her forever.
She’s lucky she did. Everything Sylvia ever taught her she did with a cigarette in her mouth and syllables pouring with the smoke from her lips, and Angela knows she would’ve been a lot worse off if she hadn’t hung onto Sylvia’s every word.

Summary
The one thing that has always made Curly flat fucking stupid, no matter where he is or how old he gets is Ponyboy Curtis.
Those two were like baking soda and vinegar, always had been- fine by themselves but explosive and messy as shit when they were together. Curly’s an attention seeker at the best of times, a perfect culmination of both mommy and daddy issues, but around Ponyboy he turns it into an art form. It’s not surprising really, now that Angela thinks about it, that Curly is practically in love with the guy.

Summary
Buck Merril never knew what to expect from those Shepard kids.
Perhaps it was because he was used to the Shepard kids’ strangeness by now that he wasn’t all that surprised when Tim Shepard came to sell him blow with a baby propped on his hip.

Summary
Curly knows he’s dumb. Maybe it’s got something to do with all the concussions or maybe he is just as flat fucking stupid as every teacher and judge and anyone else with a pulse has ever told him- but he knows his sister. Angela and him are as close as he thought possible given their life and their family and the straws that always come up short. He knows her, and he knows that something is wrong, that she isn’t right. That something has made her different even if he doesn’t quite know what it is.

Kind of a companion piece/sequel to 'Paint a mask and hide behind it' but can be read as a standaloneSeries

Summary
“You did good kid,” Tim told him, fixing Curly’s t-shirt, “that bastard ain’t gonna take a swing at you again, y’hear?”
“I’ll beat him up if he tries. You can help,” Curly offers magnanimously, “you’re real good at beatin’ people up. I bet me’n you could beat up anyone if we tried. Even a football player soc.”
“Even a football player soc.” Tim agrees, hating the softness that’s welling in his chest. He’s supposed to be angry at them- they’re big enough to know they aren’t supposed to talk to Ma if he isn’t around and he’s had the talk about not eating or drinking anything Ma gives them more than once- but it’s hard when the booze has made Curly so sweet, and Angie so cuddly, curled into his lap.

Summary
“Goddamnit Angel,” Curly roars again, “get out here and bring the first aid kit!”
That spurs her to action and she snatches the small first aid kit out from under the bathroom sink and hightails it to the living room. Curly is there, wide eyed, Tim propped up against him. For a second Angela doesn’t realize what the problem is. When she does, her brain refuses to let her believe it.
A dark stain is spreading rapidly across the side of Tim’s shirt, even as Curly half drags half carries him over to the couch and deposits him on it as gently as he can. Despite how careful Curly’s being, a pained grunt still forces its way out from between Tim’s clenched teeth.
*********
Or, that time Tim got stabbed and they thought he was going to die. Technically part of a series but can absolutely be read as a standalone fic.
