With other tributes that seem very determined to hunt him down, and a struggling mentor, he's sure that he won't make it.
But he trusts himself to find reliable allies, anything that could possibly help postpone what he thinks is his inevitable death in the arena. He isn't sure when his allies end up being a shy-looking and quiet boy from District 12 and a seemingly untrustworthy male tribute from District 10 with a questionable past.
Yet soon enough, he is reminded that there can only be one victor.

Tim and Dallas were not close, despite being friends. Really, all Dallas ever did was slash Tim's tires, and all Tim ever did was fight him about it.
Sure, Tim would let Dallas take his last cigarettes, "borrow" his clothes, and crash on his couch after fights with his dad, but so what? So what if Tim remembered the way Dal's pupils blew wide when a fist caught his jaw, or the scowl the hood shoots at Tim when he plays nurse? It's not like Tim really cared.
Yeah, Tim and Dallas were friends.
But it didn't mean anything.
OR
Tim and Dallas aren't close, but Dallas keeps showing up, and Tim lets him stay anyway. Somewhere between the fights, cigarettes, bad timing, and a night that blurs into something too quiet to ignore, "nothing" starts to look a lot like everything neither of them know how to name.

When the teacher gives them a project for 70% of their grade, they figure they'll take this serious. Its this right now, or art next year. A art class with a passing grade was needed to graduate.
It was the typical rules, no swearing, check in with the teacher if its suggestive themes, it had to be over 5 minutes, all that jazz. She even let them choose their own partners!
Except, Ponyboy actually wanted to do this, not half ass it. And who were Curly and Angela to say no to their favorite Curtis.
