Summary
James was almost to the table when he heard the portrait hole open; he turned automatically, before he'd even recognized the sound.
It was Evans. She was with her friends; they had bookbags with them, probably just come in from studying out by the lake. The other two were talking animatedly but Lily seemed off somehow, as if she, too, were concealing troubled thoughts. Her gaze passed over him without acknowledgement, like he wasn't even there. Like he didn't exist.
"Prongs? What's the — ah." Sirius had seen her too. They were going up the stairs to the girls' dormitory. None of them had spared so much as a glance for the rest of the common room.
"Don't worry about her, James," said Peter instantly. "She's nobody. You could have practically any girl you wanted after today …"
James didn't respond. His eyes were fixed on the back of Evans's head, and he felt entirely hollowed out. She'd never ignored him so completely before. He was used to her rolling her eyes, to the disdainful toss of her long red hair that showed just how little she thought of him, but actually meant she knew he was watching. This was something else.

Summary
The fear clenched like a fist around her heart, inescapable. “What if he can't forgive me? What if he hates me?”
“Why would James hate you?”
She struggled with this. Her eyelids were growing heavy. It felt like the answer should be obvious, but it eluded her, fluttering always just out of reach. “Because I moved on,” she said at last. “Because I kept going when he stopped. Because… because I learned how to be happy again. With you.”
Remus squeezed her gently against his chest. “If you think James would hate you for that,” he whispered into the fringes of her dreams, “then I question how well you remember him.”
