Summary
the popping of rice fills the silence for a while, tsukasa silently praying for his friend’s safety while the said friend stirs boiling water with a plastic spoon.
“i can assure you there’s nothing hazardous about my methods, tsukasa-kun,” rui continues to stir, switching on the camera setting to prove his point. “in fact, i’m inviting you to try the rice puffs yourself!”
there’s another beat of rice popping filled silence as tsukasa mulls the sight before his very eyes. “..are you using a plastic spoon to stir the rice?”

a 3+1 where rui helps tsukasa with the cold by warming him up 3 times, and the 1 time where tsukasa does the same back :D

Summary
“close your eyes,” tsukasa suddenly whispers into the dark, his eyes still closed, and rui’s heart stutters to a stop in his chest.
“my eyes..?” rui echoes, barely breathing. it does little to hide the way his voice wavers. “why do you—”
“you stare too much,” he answers before he can even finish his question.
then, rather abruptly, a hand reaches forward, and tsukasa’s fingers intertwine with rui’s.
their fingers slot together like puzzle pieces. rui’s hand is slightly larger, the both of them realise as they join hands. tsukasa sinks into rui’s hand from the top of his own, locking his fingers as he takes in a deep breath, and rui notices. he mirrors him, chest rising on an anxious inhale — and secures his own fingers too.

when a sleepy rui irreparably breaks the heater, tsukasa takes matters onto his own hands for the night.

Summary
until tsukasa’s voice suddenly rings in his ears, bright and clear, and rui found himself disobeying his mind’s will.
turning his head, he tries to steal a glance, only to find his world spinning and then turning pitch black. surely the world had suddenly stopped — the sounds of gasps and shouting becoming static to his ears, and everything else in sight was blurry.
he had tripped over his own shoelaces.
“—rui! are you okay?”
he blinks at the sight of tsukasa in front of him. “why hello, tsukasa-kun. what brings you here today?”

after rui falls flat on his face from staring at tsukasa for too long, tsukasa takes him back to his house to nurse his bruise.

Summary
clearing his throat, tsukasa turns back and his hands go to rui’s shoulders, brushing the snow from them. the bitter, wet cold on his fingertips serve as a reminder to himself to not do something so reckless again.
“..how long have you even been outside in the cold like this? i know i’ve given you gloves to wear, but that doesn’t mean you can stay outside in the snow like that, you know,” he chides away, shaking his head as more snow falls off of rui. “what’s going to happen if you get sick?”
“and tsukasa-kun would take care of me if i got sick, right?” he sings, the look in his eyes and the tone of his voice teasing although he’s sure in his claim — it stirs something in tsukasa’s chest.
“it wouldn’t happen in the first place if you’d listen to me,” tsukasa huffs, ignoring the feeling that gives him. “and seriously rui, you’re going to freeze if you don’t zip up your jacket!”

after tsukasa is snowed in from a snowstorm, rui has come to rescue him!
however, his methods are quite frowned upon.or : rui makes a horrid attempt at getting rid of snow. so next feasible solution — they duke it out in the snow

“i told them in advance that you were staying for dinner,” tsukasa admits as he pours a ladle of soup into his parents’ bowls. “so don’t be nervous, rui!”
soup begins to fill his own bowl too. rui feels his heart begin to steadily thud a bit faster in his chest, and he absentmindedly runs his cold hands over his lap. “ah, i’m only a little nervous to meet your parents after all,” he chokes out, although unconvincingly.
tsukasa’s mother chuckles, observing the pair speak. “you two make such a cute couple.”
the words, spoken genuinely with no ill intent, rui is sure, but he freezes up immediately, his eyes going wide, and his mouth falls open in shock.

good news : tsukasa has invited rui to stay for dinner!

"i thought you were asleep,” tsukasa remarks when he catches rui staring, his alarmed voice melting into something more tender seconds in, something softer. in truth, he’s suddenly self-conscious of how rui knows him; of how he knows the every nook and cranny of his affections. rui knows to look for the embarrassed tinge of red over his cheeks, despite the darkness of his room.
the know-it-all hums, the tune soft from sleep, with his head a comforting weight against tsukasa. tsukasa sincerely hopes he can’t hear how loud his heart is already pounding.
“you stare too much,” tsukasa whispers, growing embarrassed. “close your eyes.”

"do you wanna be cursed by the gods?" tsukasa replies drily, not showing rui an ounce of sympathy, instead walking forward despite his numerous protests since making their way there. “besides, i warned you!”
"but the gods curse me every year by making me get caught by the teachers," rui shakes his head as he stares up into the sky pitifully.
tsukasa snorts. “well, if you'd stop getting into trouble, teachers wouldn’t even be chasing you in the first place!”
“they were chasing the two of us together,” he corrects matter-of-factly, earning a fed-up glare in response.
