Summary
Lucanis told her that victory wasn't a dagger in the heart, it was everything that came after. It was peace.
They won. But she wouldn't call this a victory.
Especially when she can't even be certain about her place in her own family.

Summary
8 - Over three years after Caterina's death, Rook has more than she ever could have imagined for herself: a husband, a daughter, an extended family too. She also has a measure of power she's trying to use well on behalf of the Crows.
And this power attracts the notice of a certain shadow that is rumoured to have killed a lot of Crows. (You might even say he's murdered a whole murder.)
---After recovering from a stroke and learning that Lucanis has proposed to Rook, Caterina gives Lucanis one last contract. It's tradition for the First Talon, upon receiving this title, to be sent out to complete a contract with only a knife. However, with the world still falling apart, even Caterina has had to make some minor concessions.
Fulfilling the contract becomes much more complicated than Lucanis and Rook ever could have imagined when they discover the target isn’t in Treviso. The target fled to their estate in the south—on the border of the Marches. Things being as they are, and with what lurks on the other side of the mountains, it really couldn’t have gotten much worse. Nevermind the people with grey masks who seem to be watching Rook, or that Spite keeps insisting something has infested her….

Summary
While waiting up for Lucanis to finish some meeting or another with Caterina, Rook happens to be in the courtyard when Illario stumbles home from a brothel. Drunk and covered in blood, he is quite the sight and, as ever, quite the handful.
In an attempt to better her relationship with him for the sake of the family, she tries to help Illario sort himself. But offering Illario a hand might end up with Rook getting a bit more than she bargained for. A drunk Illario isn't shy about revealing all sorts of things that should have remained unsaid.

Summary
Rook has an idea about how to keep Lucanis tied down. It helps that he is such a good listener, and so eager to please.
Whether it helps that Rook talks a big game, that certainly remains to be seen. At least it seems like her plans mostly work out.

The king of Antiva has recently decided that enough is enough--the Crows will kneel, one way or another, as all subjects must do. Who better to tell him that won't be happening than a Dellamorte?
Lucanis and his daughter set out to Antiva City to kindly deliver this message. Rook stays behind to manage the Crows and her delicate state in her husband's absence. She believes that she will be without her family for a week. But, perhaps, there is more family she has than she once thought....
--
Or, one of Illario's bastards finally comes calling nearly a decade after Rook killed Illario for the sake of her family.

Summary
Rook went swiftly over to the hearth. It had been swept clean of ashes, so all she had to do was add a handful of logs. Then, without any thought of restraint, moving before uncertainty could even stir, she snapped her fingers to conjure a spark just hot enough to catch on the desiccated bark. A sweet-scented puff of smoke arose. For this little bit of magic she could draw on her pooled mana alone, provoking no notice nor urges from the curious denizens of the Fade.
Rook then went to resume her seat. She nodded to Caterina, who looked not a bit impressed, nor even a little moved. She had merely received the bare minimum of what she was owed.
“So. You are my grandson’s guest. You are staying with the First Talon.”
--
One evening, Caterina Dellamorte finds Rook in her house. She doesn't know why Rook is still there, so she questions her "guest".
Amongst those questions: what does Rook think she is doing, keeping company with her grandson even though all the contracts between them have been fulfilled?

Summary
Before they became family, she was a frightened girl who completed his contract on accident, and he was a lonely bastard no-one particularly liked. Rather than kill her--as she assumed he would--Viago de Riva took a strange, mouthy girl back to his house, and tried to find her a place within it.
In which Viago de Riva finds, recruits, and then actually saves a young Rook's life.
(And maybe he quietly poisoned a few people on her behalf. Who can really know?)
