Summary
Deep down, she’s always known it was a matter of time. Every time he asks to stay at the Café, Johnny swears that he won’t do anything stupid, that he wouldn’t put her or her job in danger – not that she’d care too much about that at this point. And she believes that he means it, but trouble just seems to follow him around.

Summary
“So, just to be perfectly clear, there is no dragon?” Cristal asked once more, keeping her spear tip at the boy’s throat even though her arms were getting pretty tired.
"A dragon? Here?” The boy seemed very confused, and not at all afraid enough, which was starting to sting her pride. “You can’t believe everything you hear in the bards’ songs."

Summary
The Waste is Cristal’s idea, memories of a file she glimpsed on an editor’s desk in another life, someone’s rejected pitch for a story about the rising price of food being due to a failed agritech experiment: an introduced plant species that had taken over an entire region, choking the farms and driving the farmers out. There had been a rough map, and once they reach the right general area it isn’t too hard to follow the warning signs.
Johnny floors it through miles and miles of ghostly landscape, sending up dust clouds that must make them conspicuous among the abandoned buildings and fields/jungles, but perhaps their luck has finally turned, because the skies remain quiet.
