Tom blinks, clearly processing his words and their implications. Sonic finds himself holding his breath as he waits for him to speak.
Tom’s face turns warm as he does so, melting away Sonic’s worries entirely.
“I didn’t think you were. A girl, that is.”
Sonic puffs his chest up, grinning wildly at the statement. It was the first reaction he’s ever had from telling someone about himself, and it was the best he could’ve asked for.Sonic is still figuring out who he is; from his gender to his sexuality, everything seems to be changing. Tails manages to teach him that it's okay to not have it all figured out.

He chatters idly with the other two as Amy continues getting ready. She’s really going the full nine yards for this date, and Sonic has to say he has a begrudging respect for it. Doing everything she can not only to impress her date, but also to give herself confidence.
That’s what it is, he realises. It’s not for anyone else, it’s for her. To make her feel pretty, to make her feel special.
Sonic watches her go through a clearly memorised routine. Colour on her eyelids, darkening the edges of her eyes, putting whatever-that’s-called on her lashes, and topping it all off with a sheen of gloss on her lips.
“Amy.” Sonic’s mouth moves before his brain can catch up, too fast for his own good, as always. “Can you do mine?”Sonic is adamantly against putting effort into his appearance for this double date. Shadow won't care even if he does, so what's the point?
...This leather jacket Amy gave him is admittedly really cool, though. Plus, her makeup looks stunning.

They may not be the sharpest sword in the armoury, but Knuckles feels the weight of their ancestors. It sits upon their shoulders, constant pressure and pain. It acts as shackles, attached to each one of their limbs, a constant, unshakeable heaviness.
It’s that weight that makes one thing clear to Knuckles: since they are the only one left, it’s up to them to live up to the legacy set out before them.
They don’t know how their ancestors would react if they discovered the doubts they are having about their gender. No one else knows, but just thinking it to themself - that they are a they - sends their heart pounding ferociously against their ribcage.
Perhaps their ancestors would be okay with it, or perhaps they wouldn’t. Regardless, Knuckles is doing everything they can to make them proud in other ways, making up for their potential failures in the gender realm.Knuckles doesn't know what their ancestors would think of their gender, but, with the help of their friends, they're able to embrace themself regardless.

He does so immediately. Effortlessly.
“I love the way you make them,” Robotnik tells him. Stone has always been able to understand what the doctor really means.
He says he loves his coffee, but what Stone hears is different.
