“Per tradition, first piece goes to the birthday boy…” And with every ounce of care he could muster, Bradley carefully placed the piece in the lid of the container and slid it across the grass to the base of the stone.
Bradley sniffled again, “Sorry, it’s the dry kind…again, didn’t have time to make one at home…but at least it’s Rum cake, right?”
No response. But that was to be expected, Bradley supposed.
Bradley carefully tore off a second piece and gently handed it off to Pete, who didn’t say much but rather nodded his thanks.
And then it was his turn. Bradley carefully tore off a piece of cake for himself and shifted his position ever so slightly.
For just a second, Bradley wasn’t sure what to say, but felt like he should say something.
“Happy birthday, Jake…here’s to the first of many we’re going to spend like this until we can spend your birthday together again,” He raised the piece ever so slightly, and for some strange reason, Pete did too.
