Summary
The Heavy and the Medic are not exceedingly close with one another yet. The Heavy hardly knows anything about him at all, but it isn’t in his nature to pry. They maintain their own form of impersonal order, and life goes on about as simply as it can in war.
That is, of course, all about to change.

Summary
“And even so,’ the hiss said, like there was a smile in its tone, ‘you have limited yourself. You remember how we molded the flesh between our fingertips, how it moved like silk, so easily — but now you would hold us back for the sake of emotion. If we are not a woman anymore, then we shall not act like it. If we are Herbert, then we shall act like it.’
‘We shall not,’ it told him, ‘allow ourselves to be attached.”

Summary
“You are alright?”
Herbert says nothing for a moment, only staring up at the night sky. The only sounds are the whistling of the autumn wind and the creeeaaaks of the patio swing as it inches its way back and forth, back and forth.
“Maybe,” is all he says, finally. “I don’t know.”
—
Herbert and Mikhail go over for dinner with Mikhail’s family, despite Herbert’s wariness. There are many things to be said.

Summary
And his heart beats impossibly in Herbert’s grasp, as if responding just to his touch. There’s blood on Herbert’s lips, on his palms, viscera puckering in the folds of his fingerprints, and, oh, it’s all Mikhail’s, all of it, and it smears about Herbert’s mouth in clumps like cheap lipstick.
🫀
Herbert and Mikhail consummate their (unlawful) marriage in a very…unique way. It actually proves to be rather therapeutic.

Summary
“We’ll get you something better when we get home,” Herbert coos, a lilt in his voice. “Clean underwear, a hot bath, und a good meal— all of it, matok, I promise. For you.”
🫀
The year is 1974. Herbert and Mikhail’s lives at RED are finally over, and they’re able to achieve something they’d not previously thought possible: quiet, earnest domesticity, if only for a time.
That is, of course, until one day, Mikhail dies suddenly and jarringly, and everything about their life together is ground to a halt. It’s awful. It’s painful. It’s permanent. But Herbert isn’t quite willing to accept that.
