Summary
Before Ilya can bite out a teasing remark at his state, Hollander starts to speak in a jumble of words that seem like they’ve been on the verge of spilling out for a long time.
“Don't marry her, Ilya." Hollander says desperately, now using the hold they had on each other for balance just a moment ago, to keep Ilya from running away. “Please, don’t marry her.”
“Hollander?” Ilya says the name dumbly, at a loss for how to answer.
--
Marrying Svetlana seems like the obvious solution to the growing pile of problems in Ilya's life. It's not like Hollander would care since he's dating one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Right?

Summary
Ilya looks at Shane, closer than he’s had him in months, farther away than they’ve ever stood when alone. For the first time, he actually questions himself. Would it have made a difference if Ilya came to the cottage? If they had a week? He doesn’t think it would have changed anything that matters.
“Is it everything you dreamed of?” Shane asks. An echo of Ilya’s own words passes through his mind. An old hotel gym, small and stuffy, sweaty bodies. More, Ilya asks, and Shane gives. More, Ilya still wants desperately.
No, he wants to say, because there’s only one thing he’s wanted since he was 18, and as they stand here, he knows it’s the farthest from it he’s ever been.
--
Ilya never comes to the cottage. Life goes on, a summer passes by without contact. They find their way back to each other anyway.

Summary
“Okay, you’re right. I’m sorry.” Shane says after a pause. He then quiets for a while. “You could go to my parents' house. They’d love that.” He offers.
“Shane…”
“Please, Ilya. I don’t want you to be alone right now.”
--
Ilya spends the anniversary of his father’s death at the Hollander’s house, navigating how you can still love someone after they’ve brought you so much pain.

Summary
“How did you know that he would turn?” Shane asks after a pause.
“His family is here. He would not want his parents to see him crash.“ Ilya answers simply, like that is an entirely sound strategy. Shane blinks for a few moments, taking the words in.
“Your dad is here too.”
Ilya smiles at that, and it’s not nice. It’s a mean sort of expression, joyless. Like he’s privy to some odd inside joke only he understands. He walks away after that without replying.
--
Shane Hollander is a Mercedes driver, and Ilya Rozanov drives a Red Bull. They’re destined to be rivals. If only Shane could somehow shake off the strange pull he feels between them.
