Nightmare knew he was not the best in the Multiverse.
Hell, he was not even good.
He was the God of Negativity, a title that followed him like a curse carved into his very bones, and it made perfect sense that someone like him would end up completely alone.
Or: Nightmare is lonely so he ends up recruiting Killer, Dust and Horror all based on misunderstandings.

Summary
Dust hated Killer.
He hated the way Killer talked too loud, laughed too sharp, and always seemed to push everyone’s patience just to see who would snap first. Killer was annoying, a complete douchebag, and somehow still so goddamn attractive that it made Dust feel sick whenever he noticed it.
The worst part wasn’t Killer though. The worst part was himself.
Or: Dust's Papyrus is acting up and Dust can't handle it anymore. Good thing Killer comes to the rescue and Nightmare helps behind the scenes.

Blue was absolutely devastated.
It didn’t matter how much either Red or Classic tried to comfort him, nothing seemed to get through.
His shoulders shook as he sat there, hands clutching his hoodie, tears slipping down his face faster than he could wipe them away.
It felt like something inside him had cracked, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t fix it.
