Jabber Wonger is still mourning when she meets her husband for the first time.
She's lucky Zodyl and Cthoni took her mother's will in stride. So, Jabber's lucky. They're both odd, too comfortable with walking away from the norm. Cthoni looks at her like she'll jump out of a window at the smallest inconvenience, and Zodyl is quiet enough that it reminds Jabber of her mum at times, but living under their care isn't terrible.

There's no good reason for it, no way to explain the slow death that's been growing inside him, but it's there. He can't get rid of it.
Zanka was born with it and he will die with it, no matter what he does.
Maybe that's why he listens to the man. He's too exhausted to yell at the figure to shut his mouth, even though he wants to. It won't change a thing – by the end of it Zanka will still be holding the stupid stick, and he'll still be dead.
