Aizawa Shouta is 22 years old and he is in the agency lobby. It’s sometime around nine o’clock, maybe, and he’s just checking in to start patrol. It’s been one of those days you could cut the air with a cake knife, and that's the kind of night it's shaping up to be too. The kinda thing that sticks to your teeth.
The most interesting thing about memory is the way that it bleeds. It never stays quite how you put it. Take it off the shelf, turn it over and over, look at it well.

Summary
“Have you had dinner?” he asks after a few minutes.
“… yes.” Shinsou’s tone doesn’t hold much conviction. His eyes avoid Shouta’s, shadowed by a nearby overhang. Shouta raises both eyebrows and looks skyward.
“Oh, really. What did you have for dinner?”
“Konbini coffee and some tictacs?” Shinsou makes hesitant eye contact with him again, rubbing at the back of his neck. Shouta snorts.
“Oh well in that case, I’m sure you’re fine then.” He rolls his eyes, nudging his mentee over toward the front door of the izakaya, glass half blocked by old window clings and faded advertisements. “In here, come on.”

It happens like this: It’s a slow night.
The rain spits at Shouta’s eyes, strings his hair into a long, damp mess down his back. He’s considering asking the support team for a pair of lab goggles or something for nights like these. His current goggles are good, but they can’t keep out the rain.
Songbird’s got the suspect on his knees on the slick asphalt. The headlights blanket the little stretch of interstate off-ramp in pale white, make everything shine. It’s abandoned, this late at night, although the freeway below still hums with life.
The car’s driver’s side door is open and the car is beeping about the driver’s side door being open. They’ve got the man halfway handcuffed– he waved a knife at a cop and fled a traffic stop, see, and the Pros wouldn’t normally respond to this sort of thing but, hey, like I said, it’s a slow night, and– and then all of a sudden. From the back of the moving truck is, a thump, kind of.
