She asked for one every birthday and Christmas. Anytime she went to a friend’s birthday party where one was center stage, Shane was always asked in the car on the way home, and he was forced to give a non-committal “I’ll think about it.”
He was getting tired of hearing it, and his patience was wearing thin, “if we buy a trampoline, it’s all on you. I’m not building it, I’m not watching her while she’s on it, and I’m not being the bad guy forcing her to the ER when she gets hurt. If you accept those terms, then we can buy a trampoline.”
Ilya’s face lit up, “that’s all it takes? Let’s go, I will build tonight!”

Summary
Shane and Ilya sit nervously, knowing they have some time before Mariya goes on. They pay attention respectfully, Ilya reaching over for Shane’s hand, which has become sweaty at the thought of the pressure his daughter is feeling.
The 5th grade band comes onto the stage and takes their places. They clap politely, and the concert begins.
Nothing could prepare them for the SCREECHES of instruments that would erupt from the band, shocking both of them. The tension they both were holding instantly dissolves, Ilya immediately burying his head in Shane’s chest, unable to hold in his laughter. Shane bites his lip hard, also struggling to hold back. Ilya is shaking with laughter, attempting to hide to not be rude to the parents and the kids onstage.
