Sometimes it feels like she’s trying so hard and she just can’t, she can’t. And suddenly everything's just – just too much, and somehow Tony’s got her face down on the workbench, arms curled around her head, big helpless shuddering sobs rising up in her chest.
Because Steve - it doesn't matter what Tony does, Steve’ll still just think she’s selfish and too loud and a show-off, and it doesn’t matter, she doesn’t care, Tony doesn’t care what Steve thinks.
It’s – it’s just, she’s so lonely, so bloody lonely. And she shudders and sniffles again and presses her face pathetically into her arms.

Summary
Steve stands quietly under the mistletoe, watching, and thinks she could watch all night: Tony is bright and funny and effervescent and sweet, though Steve knows that Tony would never believe in her own sweetness. Tony’s hair is sticking up in the dearest little dark curls over her head. There’s one particular curl over her ear that Steve wants very much to poke her finger through.
Tony’s coming over now. Steve doesn’t move, just smiles a little and waits for her; her heart is suddenly thumping in her throat. Take a risk, Steve had told herself, because Tony was worth it, a thousand times, and mistletoe was mistletoe and sometimes wonderful things happened beneath it.
Peggy would have thought so, Steve thinks suddenly. Peggy would have said that to her: take a risk.

‘I want,’ Tony mumbles, ‘please, Steve, I want it.’
‘What do you want, Tony?’ Steve murmurs into her ear, and Tony gulps and burrows her head down. Steve waits patiently, smoothing her thumb into the little strip of skin at Tony's waist, feeling her body quiver.
It comes at last, that little half-sob that Tony makes every time she asks this, and then Tony’s voice comes, small and wobbly. ‘Want – need you to take care of me.’
