Summary
"Oh." Tommy runs a hand down the cover. It's a rough texture, pleasant against his hand. "Thanks, Wil."
"Course, kid." Wilbur smiles at him, fond but tired. Tommy smiles back and wishes this could last forever.
Eventually, they walk down the beach together. Tommy picks shells while they talk. They talk about meaningless things, like the heat this year, Tommy's plans for the summer. Stupid things that will mean nothing in a year or two. In a year or two, maybe Wilbur will be gone again. Maybe Schlatt will be dead. Maybe Tommy will take his siblings and run from this place, as far away as he can get. Maybe Tommy will learn how to be angry at everything that's happened to him. In a year or two, maybe Tommy will kill himself with a dull knife on the kitchen floor.
Tommy doesn't understand why his foster brother Wilbur is always writing. In the years that follow, he slowly learns why, and he learns that everyone lies, and everyone leaves, and all you can do is try to be good and hope you don't fail.
