Summary
"You're my salvation," he said. The words were barely audible, pressed into your collarbone like a prayer. "You know that, right? You're the only reason I'm still—the only reason I haven't—"
"Don't." Your voice came out thicker than you intended. Your hand came up to cup his jaw, your thumb brushing across his lower lip. It was damp and warm and it trembled slightly under your touch. "Don't finish that sentence."

Summary
Dr. Ryland Grace was standing at the front of the room, his hair a mess, his eyes ringed with exhaustion, pointing at a holographic display with a stylus. His lab coat was rumpled. There was a coffee stain on his collar.
He looked exactly the same as he had thirteen years ago. Just older. More tired.
Your fingers started tapping against your tablet. Index, ring, middle, pinky.
His eyes found you.
The room was full of people — forty or fifty scientists, most of them older than you, most of them decorated — but his gaze cut through the crowd like a laser. He stared at you for a long moment, his jaw going slack.
Then he broke into a grin so wide it crinkled the corners of his eyes.

You never knew silence could be so loud until the day you sat in that cramped hospital office, clutching his hand like it was the only thing tethering you to the earth, and listened to a stranger in a white coat tell you that your husband was dying.
