Summary
"Hey, Mel," he offered her, his voice weak. Mel tilted her head to one side. For just a moment, the shadows of the ambulance bay cast a darkness over his left eye like a bruise.
"Hey, Frankie," she whispered.
Frank Langdon looked down at his feet, shaking his head slowly. Mel found herself walking over to him before she had even decided to move. They stood alone, together in the silent bay.
"No one's called me that in… a very long time."
An alternate universe in which 12-year-old Melissa King meets a strange boy in the woods behind her home. Over the course of the carefree summer they spend together, the unlikely friends begin to realize that they needed one another more than they knew. Summary
"We'll figure it out," was all she could find it in herself to say. She offered him a weak smile, which he did not return. "You'll… be in my heart, always. And we can stay friends, maybe try long distance for awhile, but… I have to go."
"I know," Frank said, simply, even as his voice cracked. "I just wish you wouldn't make this sound like a goodbye, Mel. Like you said: we'll figure it out."

Summary
"But I don't want this to end, Mel," Frank admitted softly.
Mel's words faded as she stared at him, at the warmth and tenderness in his eyes as he shifted closer to her. "Like… you don't want the wedding to end?" she asked as he drew near. He shook his head slowly.
"No, Mel. This. Us. I want… us to continue. Exactly as we are now."
In which Abby is remarrying a mere year after the Langdons divorce. Summary
Mel shook her head at him disparagingly.
"Langdon… you need to be safer. You can't help anyone if you keep taking risks with patients like this."
Frank nodded as if he understood, agreed even, but the ache in his head was too great to focus on Mel's gentle words. He was sent home early that day, despite his begs to stay. He returned home to a dark, empty house and wept alone in his kitchen.
In which Frank Langdon struggles with his bad habits after life implodes around him. Or: 5 times Frank puts himself in harm's way at work just to feel useful again + the 1 time Mel jumps in to save him.

Summary
"You don't need to be experienced," Frank said, his voice just as low. "Some people like inexperience."
"Really?" Mel flushed, her eyes darting between his as her cheeks grew noticeably redder. "I, um… I still wish I had more experience, anyhow. I've thought of just asking a friend some day if I could… practice, with them."
Frank titled his head to one side, his small smile widening into something gentle and goofy. "Oh really? Have anyone in mind?"
In which Frank hooks up with Mel a mere twenty-four hours after he and Abby agree to separate. "Just one time" has aftereffects that neither are prepared for… especially when Abby comes to Frank with life-altering news of her own.

Summary
"You're very obedient, aren't you?" Mel grinned, pushing Frank's sweaty hair out of his face. He nodded weakly. She tilted her head and regarded him for a moment, her eyes wandering down his exposed neck and bare chest thoughtfully. "Bark for me?"
"Woof."
The word came out instinctively, as if he had been simply waiting for the order. Mel's smile widened with satisfaction.
"Good boy. Now come clean up the mess you've made."
In which Frank takes Robby off the pedestal he kept his mentor on for so many years when he realizes he no longer cares to chase the glory of being chosen his successor. In his place stands the glowing support of Melissa King: someone Frank finds himself almost inherently drawn to follow.

Summary
"I won't call you sir," Mel scoffed, ignoring how quickly she had folded into calling him that last time. Her cheeks burned with how easily he had managed to capture her and pin her to his lap— he held her down with ease, as if she weighed nothing at all. She huffed with annoyance even as her heart raced with excitement.
"Yes you will, baby," Dr. Langdon said, his voice so warm and rough it made her ache.
"Make me."
