Summary
“I’m from Cork, if you must know.” James offered, but there was a flatness to his tone again that Sherlock couldn’t quite place.
Still, hailing from Cork was more than he had known previously about his friend. He took a moment to consider what he knew about the place, while James and Mother both returned to their plates.
“Did your family work in exports then?” Sherlock asked.
“No.” James replied.
“A lot of butter and beef comes from Cork.” He remarked.
“Aye. Most of it all bound for Britain and abroad.” James agreed quietly, still so much more subdued in tone than he had been previously.Sherlock wasn’t entirely sure what had necessitated this turn toward solemnity. He’d been hoping to uncover something more along the lines of what Mother had been sharing before, stories of childhood antics or perhaps even something embarrassing.

Summary
“I’m so sorry! What happened to your mother, James dear?” Cordelia asked gently, stopping her fidgeting and placing a delicate hand atop his wrist.
He permitted the touch, although he was still warring with how exactly he wanted to answer her. He certainly wasn’t going to lie, the woman had been told too many harmful lies for him to be comfortable adding any, even if they were for his own benefit.
He decided to simply see where her questions might lead, but also prepared himself to think up an excuse to stop answering at any point, if he so chose. He wouldn’t say anything that might threaten the limits of his own composure.

Summary
There was no danger to be found in something that wasn’t quantifiable, in something that wasn’t real. The only real, quantifiable thing between he and James, for now, was friendship, and so Mycroft’s concern was both misplaced and unwarranted. Not to mention unwelcome.
“We’re only friends.” Sherlock reiterated, stifling a wince at how sullen he sounded.
“Yes, well, still best to make sure you’re careful about how your friendship is perceived by others.” His brother insisted, nodding at where James remained asleep, head atop his thigh.

Summary
He found himself reaching out, laying a slow, almost tentative touch to the back of James’ hand. The other man was warm, even warmer than the lingering heat of Constantinople’s blazing sun, still radiating outwards from the stonework around them, despite the onset of proper nightfall. James didn’t recoil from his touch, for which he was grateful, but he didn’t relax into it either. At least not at first.
Gradually, some of the tension drained from his posture, and the wariness in his eyes retreated, although it was replaced by something no less guarded, only less anticipatory in its suspicion. Still, James’ hand shifted beneath his own, fingers spreading in a way that settled Sherlock’s touch more comfortably and deliberately across the back of his palm. James even began to brush his thumb against his in a minute, featherlight back-and-forth movement. It was a small thing, but enough to set Sherlock’s heart kicking violently against the inside of his ribs.Series

Summary
James staggered a bit, when he went to step closer, finding that his head was still swimming. He reached up to probe at where the pain was radiating most sharply, and tried to cover the resulting wince with a laugh.
“It’s no wonder you used to let her and the gamekeeper’s daughter put you in dresses.” He teased. “She has quite the arm on her, your sister does.”
“Don’t.” Sherlock said, voice tight. “Don’t do that, James.”

Summary
“Where am I from, Sherlock?” James asked flatly.
“Ireland.” He answered. “County Cork. You were never more specific than that.”James’ face shifted into a more expectant look, as if that was meant to have produced some manner of realization in Sherlock, which wasn’t the case.
“What does you being from Ireland have to do with any of this?” He pressed, when James only continued to stare at him in apparent expectation.
“What does being me Irish have to do with my mistrust of the British government?” The man replied, in a positively withering deadpan.
“Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom.” Sherlock remarked. “Therefore, you’re a citizen in the same way that I am. I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make.”
“Jesus fucking Christ…” James muttered, burying his head in his hands.Series

Summary
“Reckon I’ve done me head in a bit.” He answered carefully.
Sherlock frowned at that, a worried pinch settling between his brows. That wasn’t what he wanted, he had been trying to make Sherlock less upset, he remembered. Teasing should help. James was good at that, he just needed to make a joke.
“Not like Silas has done, mind.” He laughed. “He went and scattered bits of his head across the rocks.”Sherlock’s eyes went wide, but instead of less upset, he only looked startled on top of the upset that had already been colouring his features.

Summary
Sherlock turned to scoop out more salve from the tin, and considered the way James was positioned. He had his elbows and forearms braced on the back of the chair, elevated to just barely above chest-height. That made it easy enough to reach beneath his arm, towards the upper end of his ribcage.
He was close, but hadn’t actually yet made contact with the man’s torso before James was shying away from Sherlock’s hand, tension visibly climbing the ladder of his spine as his breath hitched in a stuttering, panicky sort of way.
Apprehension that bordered on outright fear. Sherlock’s heart constricted dizzyingly in response to the realization.
“Hush, James.” He soothed, kneading gently with the hand he still had on the nape of the man’s neck. “It’s alright.”(A more or less direct sequel to my previous “James was hurt/concussed after the factory explosions” fic, this time from Sherlock’s POV!)

Summary
Sherlock scowled, wiping at his mouth with the back of his hand, even though James had already removed the crumbs for him. His blue, blue eyes kept catching on James’ before darting away, only to return again moments later. The charming rouge of his flush only serving to highlight their colour further.
“What?” He asked.
“What, what?” James chuckled, earning a more intensified scowl.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Sherlock insisted.
“And how exactly am I looking at you, Petal?” He challenged, it was simply too much fun to rile the man up like this.
“Like you want to eat me, instead of those pastries of yours…” Sherlock muttered, looking away more studiously this time.
(A softer interaction between James and Sherlock after Silas’ Death, while still recovering from the factory explosions.)

This time, Mycroft’s sigh was irritated more-so than fretful. The exhale loosened his shoulders, but only for an instant before his next breath drew them back up tight again.
“None of that now.” James chided. “Don’t blame me because you’re too bloody English to be direct. If you have something you’d like to ask me, ask me.”
