Daniel feels cold. Not the kind of 'coming off a high' or 'sleeping in the park in the middle of winter' cold, just a deep, down to the bones feeling. A lack of all warmth.
He's not sure it's any better than the feeling of fiery, molten lava that spread all throughout his body right after his turning, as his insides shriveled up and decayed, his body fighting itself through the process of death and rebirth.
Or the look on Armand's face before he fled out the window, eyes wide with horror. Daniel had screamed and pleaded for him, calling out his name over and over again, but the cries went unanswered.

Summary
The thing about bowling, Daniel thought, was that it was deeply resistant to dignity.
This was its great democratizing virtue. It was a game designed so that everyone, at some point, looked like an idiot. The wind-up, the shuffle, the release, that horrible moment when the ball went wide and curved into the gutter with the soft, shameful sound of failure. It did not matter how old you were, how intelligent, how in command of a room. The lane didn't care. The pins didn't care. The rental shoes certainly didn't care.
Armand cared.

It took Daniel a beat to catch up to the conversation. He blinked. The streetlights were making halos and Armand was standing underneath one, which was frankly rude of him, to be beautiful like an angel, lit up like an altarpiece while asking Daniel to go home with him.
"Oh," Daniel said. The gears turned over, slow and syrup-sweet. "Oh, I see. I see what's happening here."
"Do you?
"You're hitting on me." Daniel said it fondly. Generously. Like he was letting Armand off the hook for it. "It's fine. It's fine, it's — I'm very hittable. It happens. I'm told I have a face for radio and a voice for terrible decisions." He laughed. "However the saying goes. But. Ah. You should know. I kinda have a boyfriend."
