If someone who had only been here for three months, only having unlocked his magic in that time, only had that time to train it, and having no formal swordsmanship or combat training whatsoever in that time, let alone before the academy (because despite the strength and raw skill behind his blows, they are still fairly unrefined), could beat him, someone who had been trained since childhood for all of those things? Who had seen war and battle and betrayal more than most? (Who had seen more death than most, too. After all, one doesn’t become the last of their cohort for no reason).
It terrifies them.
Scott is strong. Stronger than someone who’s had magic for such a short time should be.

Summary
The notes on the mage had said he was loyal. His duel against Osteon had said he was strong. His fight against the bandits had said that he was willing to do what it takes. The Queen had thought that loyalty was for her. That the strength was found in dedication and not desperation. That the destruction of the bandits was devotion to the crown instead of the people around him. Thats why she awarded him Stalwart. Thats why she thanked him for his efforts. She had thought, rather naively, that one of the few volunteers in the room had done so for her.
A cold, hard dread set in, filling her heart at the sight of Scott the Stalwart’s glare, and she came to realise as accurate that title may be, she was very, very wrong to presume its was towards the kingdom.
