When senior year started, it seemed like all anyone would ever talk about was the Princess Prom (stupid fucking name, by the way). It was supposedly, ‘the highlight of every Horde High student’s senior year.’ Catra had never understood the frenzy when she first heard about it. After all, it’s not like there aren’t other school dances. It’s just a regular senior prom with a dumb frilly name tacked onto it.
And yeah, when Princess Prom came around, Catra still thought it was stupid. But it felt different from all those other dumb school dances.

Flynn Myers is an out lesbian in Indiana, who just wants to go to prom with her (currently closeted) girlfriend, Carrie Wilson, but the school board, led by Carrie's very homophobic dad, Trevor Wilson, cancels the prom entirely.
In Los Angeles, a young, startup band called Julie and the Phantoms has been doing really well in California, but they need some out-of-state traction in order to get their careers going, and that, hopefully, will set them up for a long career of music. Willie, the band's manager, comes across Flynn's story online, and they find their cause to get that traction.

Because they won't let Alec take his boyfriend to the prom. Clary persuades her mother that they can gain their fame back by helping Alec to make the prom happen. But the more Clary gets to know Alec, the more she realizes that his love for Magnus is more important than fame.
