The boy was so tiny. Smaller than she’d been as a kid; Amanda had grown like a weed, lanky and knock-kneed and spitting mad at the world for what it had already done to her.
Carlos wasn't like her. He was kind, and brave. Already so selfless, even at such a young age. She didn’t know how he’d possibly be able to recover from being tested. No– not tested. Tortured. He’d done nothing wrong, nothing to hurt anyone. He’d just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
She didn't like to think about what a fine line of difference that was.
