Something terrible had happened in Blackwater.
The adults thought she wasn’t big enough to understand, that she hadn’t taken notice of those who had returned from the job, rushing into camp, shouting that they had to go, to go now, and those who hadn’t.
But Lizzie had, she took count. She knew who had left for Blackwater that morning, had counted with bated breath the members of her family who returned, fear bright in their eyes and blood darkening their clothes.
She counted until she could count no more, and those who were missing glared so brightly at her, it was as if she was trying to look at the sun.
She understood what missing meant and it filled her with dread.

So when Dutch had called out, asking for someone to ride ahead, to find somewhere to bunker down and wait out the snowstorm that had begun to kick up, he had been quick to volunteer. And, to his disappointment, Micah had, too. Arthur had as well, and he’d hoped that he’d be paired up with the man. Knowing Dutch as well as he did, though, it hadn’t come as a surprise that Arthur had been sent ahead alone, and he had been paired up with Micah and sent off.
They hadn’t gone far when the snowstorm had grown worse, kicking snow up off the ground, beginning to whip around them. They’d hunched low in their saddles, John only able to follow Micah by the glow of his lantern as it turned into a blizzard, so cold his teeth clattered together and he was sure he’d be stuck to his saddle. It wouldn’t be possible for them to find anything, now, not unless they wandered right into it.

“Hey! We got visitors!”
A few of the doors to the nearby cabins open and your eyes move to take in the sight of the men that quickly surround you and Kieran. The poor boy swallows thickly as they circle you in on the main road in their camp, his fear as stark as his face in the lantern light.
“L-Listen, we don’t mean no harm to ya,” Kieran starts, holding his hands up as you try to hold back a moan, “I just... We need passage. Just a place to wait out the storm.”
A low drawl picks up then, and you look over to your side to where a man in a large blue coat stares at you, “Think that’s not the only thing you’re tryin’ to wait out.”
