Susan paused, the hardness about her fading briefly. "He's asked for you," she added, words that felt at home in a brawl by the way they punched into his chest, stealing air and filling the void with surprise.
Arthur closed off his expression, the safest measure he had against this information. "Ain't much I can do," he argued, fingers curled tightly around his mug.
"There's little any of us can do, Mister Morgan," she pressed, not so easily dismissed. "I know you've been burning the candle at both ends and could stand to hold still a bit. Rest a while. Sit, write in your journal, be there in case he wakes." The look to her, appraising and assessing, had his instinctive response - that he'd serve them all better doing the things that needed doing - falter before it could fall from his tongue.
