Summary
Deirta manufactures an image of domestic peace—her youngest child feigning sleep in her arms as she puts a book away—before the mob bursts into the library. Its circuitous, winding bookshelves buy her enough time for one last spell to modify Essek’s memory, sealing away his recollections of den Thelyss, of Verin and Taldia, of herself.
Verin is spirited out of Rosohna, leaving his younger brother behind, right before the Bright Queen orders den Thelyss to be razed to the ground. When Verin returns, he discovers that there is no one in Rosohna who bears the name Essek den Thelyss. There is only Essek den Kryn.

Summary
Caleb is drifting off to sleep when he sees the look on Essek's face. A mask of forced indifference worn in court. Glaring at the shirt in his hands like it had personally offended him.
Caleb reached out, even knowing his arm would not reach. "What is it?" he asked, voice groggy.
The smile Essek gave him didn’t reach his eyes. He sat on the side of the bed to grab the offered hand. His response is quiet. Barely above a whisper. "It is nothing. A selfish thought".

Summary
“And so,” Eadwulf said, “ever since then, wizards must take care of their hearts, and never give it freely, for they risk the rebellion of their own magic and the curse of the Abyss.”
Silence fell over the gathered audience.
“Of course,” Caleb said, dryly, “you could see this story as a bit of propaganda to make the teenage wizards not go falling in love left and right. You know, focus on schoolwork or you’ll die.”
“Caleb, are you saying you’re in love and it’s killing you?!” Veth half-screamed.
There is so much more to live for than romantic love. After everything, Caleb Widogast chooses to live.Series

Summary
“Issa,” Leylas says. Deirta’s mouth tightens when Leylas calls her by her use-name; the name she had been given when they had been little grubs in the crèche together three centuries ago, children who had not yet known whose souls they carried in their bodies. “What is this about? Speak freely.”
Deirta takes a breath. “This one asks for Her Brilliance’s mercy upon the eldest of her children in this life, he who is named Essek of den Thelyss.”
The silence that falls is so absolute that it rings in Quana’s ears.

Summary
This is how it was supposed to go. When Bren Aldric Ermendrud was fifteen, his dreams changed. Landscapes and faces he’d never met, worries and anxieties not his own. A city of eternal night, filled with drow, bugbears, goblins and more, the sorts of things his father had told him about in stories of The Far Off.
Instead, when Bren was fourteen, he drew the eye of a mage from the Solstrice Academy.

Summary
Essek's gaze is carefully blank as he leans in, closes the gap.
"…how did you hear of Azadrun’s Series?”
Caleb stops.
He really gives this some thought.
“Er…but it was you who taught me that,” he says, eventually. “During one of our sessions, yes? Where else could I have learned of such things?”
“You are asking me?” Essek snorts. “I certainly do not recall sharing it with you.”
