Mask had a god on his belt. Soldiers spoke in whispers of the deity that the boy could unleash, the obliteration of enemy lines, the way the tide of battle could turn on a dime when Mask so willed it. Some of the whispers were awed, some were fearful. Some were jealous.
“Why not just let the Deity fight the war?” some brave souls asked. “Why involve us at all?”
The Captain was not pleased with those questions, and for a time, the whispers subsided. And then they began again, with a new question this time.
Why entrust a child with such power?
Or: The Fierce Deity teaches a few lessons.

"You guys wanna see a creepy mask?" Wild cracked a large grin making a show of what he was holding behind his back. The conversation had bounced between all the boys who all offered something to show whether simple or scary. The wild-child was just as excited to show the others something of his own travels.
The conversation turned to him as Time gave an amused huffed liked the tired dad he was as he waved Wild forward to show his mask.
A dark feeling erupted under his skin and throughout his body as he tumbled forward. Cries and shouts around him as he grasped at his chest struggling to breath. Hands supported his shoulders, his name repeated in growing worry. The people around him were unfamiliar calling a name he didn't know as the world around him darkened and he succumbed to the feeling of numbness as he weakly tried to call out.

He does but only because if he walks away these people who should be better fighters than this will be wiped out. How he ends up sticking with this new Hero Link and they find another Hero Link he has no idea but maybe it will work out anyway.

War was problematic, and sometimes, it was not the enemies or the monsters that made it so. Sometimes, it was the people who are believed to be allies.
Link (Warriors) and Mask find this out the hard way when a soldier takes the Fierce Deity mask for what he thought to be playful banter. However, it results in setting ablaze a rage in the deity none had ever seen before.

[For Whumptober 2021: Day 22 - They Made Me Do It]
Mask swings his arm and his sword arcs accordingly, blood and viscera splattering the ground in his wake. Monster screams ring out around him but he does not fear. Mask has a hard time feeling anything. Emotions always dull when he is present. And Mask can certainly feel him now, sealed across his face, soaked deep into his skin like the stink of blood that Mask can never quite scrub from his tunic.
Beside him -inside him- the Fierce Deity revels. It delights in the power of its strikes, double helix blade slicing through moblins like they were made of chu jelly. The deity spins their body, exalting in the stretch of muscle and breathing deeply.
Mask’s lungs fill with the stench of smoke and death.
They kill as one and a dull pulse ripples through Mask’s mind. It might have been anxiety.
