In dealing with gods, entities similar to or bigger than gods, supernatural and extraterrestrial creatures, humans could be divided into two types:
First type are the ones who respect them, worship them. They see non-human beings as superior. Some try to get on their good side for their own benefit, some do because they're scared. These are the cowards and the greedy.
Second type are the ones you would call dehumanizing, even though the beings they are dealing with are not even human, and that is for the lack of a better word. They see non-human beings as inferior. They would use, abuse, enslave and torture any non-human being if they had the power, and they would do it with a clear conscience because they're not actually hurting other people!
Desire had first-hand experience with both of these types.
Hob Gadling was a third type. He INVENTED a third type.
Desire and Hob find themselves obsessed with each other in Morpheus' absence; trying to fill a void he left behind. They will clash and they will hurt; but they will also love, which will be their undoing

Or Dream and Hob love each other so much that it makes a kid and there's so much family drama and a spiral of emotions that I forgot what I was writing about for a moment before it wraps up in family forgiveness and new beginnings. There is also maybe a MAJOR FACTOR CHANGE, which changes the trajectory of Dream's fate.

There’s a slight growl in Hobs voice as he has to speak his friend's fate aloud, he expects him to again be amused by Hobs anger but he simply looks away towards the window with no clear expression.
“…perhaps.” There’s no real intonation in his tone and Hob feels a brief stab of anxiety over what that could mean.

Hob swallowed. "What do I have to do?"
"You live your life as you choose. Then on this day, every 100 years, we will meet," the Lord began. "And after each meeting, I will have you join me in the chambers upstairs."

"Ah, thank you, much appreciated," Hob says gratefully, cupping his cold hands around the hot cup with relish. The labour of putting the signboard back up in a panic after it fell in the night's snow three hours before the inn was set to open isn't quite enough to push back the biting winter chill. Thank god for the end of global warming obviously, but Hob did not miss the cold.
He takes a sip and sighs, closing his eyes in bliss.
When he opens his eyes, Dream is centimetres away.
