Vanessa knows it’s a privilege to watch Daniela soften for the woman she’s decided to spend the rest of her life with and to observe the ease with which Carla loves her in return.
She asks about it, once, about how it feels to love somebody, and she doesn’t know why she wants to know, doesn’t know why it even matters to her, but Carla only pauses the TV and turns to her, aware, too, that Vanessa’s grip is loosening on girlhood, a wisdom in her eyes that says she might know something else, too, that she isn’t letting on.
“I never knew I could love someone like I love Dani,” Carla tells her simply. “And I don’t think I could ever love anyone else.”
“I’d like to love somebody like that,” Vanessa admits. “Do you think I will?”
Carla smiles at her softly. “If you want to, then you will, honey.”
Vanessa takes that and tucks it away.

“I just want to do this right,” Carla tells her softly, fingertips ghosting over Daniela’s bicep, back and forth.
“We are doing this right,” Daniela replies softly, turning over to look at her, pulling the sheet up over her stomach. She pillows her hands under her head. There’s a relaxed set about her shoulders, like she’s never been happier than this.
Carla smiles to herself. All she’s ever wanted is for Dani to be happy.
“I just want to make sure,” she begins carefully. “I mean, he is your family.”
“Tu eres mi familia,” Daniela corrects, humming as she reaches up to tuck a lock of hair behind the other woman’s ear. “Why does it matter what he thinks?”
“When’s the last time you saw him?”

She gestures around Citi Field, almost completely visible below them where they’re sat up in the cheap seats. Carla’s leg bounces in excitement, and Daniela can’t help but smile to herself. She tugs the hat on further in a show of support.

Having lived in the city all her life, Carla’s used to seeing interesting things and people. She’s learned not to stare — her mom has always told her it's impolite — and every teacher she’s ever had has confirmed that she has an overactive, though wonderful, imagination.
It’s why she doesn’t think anything of the idiosyncrasies of a certain barrio called Washington Heights, writes off the few things that don’t quite fit, like how Abuela Claudia’s table always seems to have just enough chairs and the dining room always has just enough space, no matter how many guests she has. Or the way cabs come too quickly to be adhering to the laws of time or the city’s infamous street congestion. Or the way everybody seems to know her as soon as she moves in.

“That skirt’s not yours,” Vanessa observes idly as she walks next to Carla on the way to yet another block birthday party. It honestly seems like there’s a birthday every week, though none of them are complaining at the amount of good food they’ve been getting to eat. “It’s too short to be yours.”
“It’s mine,” Daniela replies from Carla’s other side without missing a beat, eyes widening as she realizes what she just let slip, rushing to cover her own tracks. “She needed something to go with the top. I offered.”
Carla nods enthusiastically, doing a quick spin on the sidewalk to show off the lift of the flowy fabric, lips twitching when she notices a certain pair of eyes on her that quickly flicker away just as they’re becoming too obvious.
Vanessa, though, caught in her own world, just gapes, clearly taken aback at the thought that Daniela would lend her clothes to anyone. “You never let me borrow anything.”
(Or, Daniela and Carla share clothes. Nobody really notices, but it means something to them. A four and one.)
